Two-goal start is enough to get on your Wyc, Pompey
Two-goal start is enough to get on your Wyc, Pompey

Pompey gave Wycombe a two-goal start at the end of a poor first half-hour at Adams Park - but recovered to claim their 10th draw in 20 games.

With Adam McGurk replacing Gareth Evans in the starting line-up that had seen off York in emphatic fashion in midweek, the opening exchanges were fairly even with neither side looking particularly convincing in the final third.

Pompey - again backed by more than a third of the crowd - found themselves one down on 28 minutes and it was another goal to forget for Brian Murphy. He rushed out of his area to deal with a through-ball but his his clearance straight to Luke O'Nien.

His attempt was blocked but it fell to Michael Harriman, who took advantage of Murphy still being out of postion to convert from long range.

Before Pompey had had a chance to recover from that shock, Wycombe netted a second. Harriman was again involved, crossing from the right for Garry Thompson to fire in No2.

Sam Wood might have made it three for Wanderers but Pompey found new hope of getting something just before the break when Caolan Lavery slotted in after Christian Burgess and Marc McNulty combined to set him up with a simple chance.

Pompey had the momentum at the start of the second half - and should have had a penalty when Adam Webster seemed to be impeded. But Webster got his own back when he powered in a header 10 minutes into the half from Ben Davies' corner.

McGurk and then Evans, who came on for him, both had chances to put Pompey into the lead, as did Kyle Bennett and Burgess.

If anyone was going to win it, it was Pompey - but they couldn't turn their possession into a third goal and had to settle for a point, one they would certainly have been happy with at two down.

Their next test comes in round two of the FA Cup at home to Accrington, who have already drawn 0-0 at Fratton in the league this season.
