Jansson Linked Again
Saturday, 20th Jan 2018 10:01

Saints are once again being linked with a bid for Leeds United central defender Pontus Jansson, but will the Yorkshire club be willing to sell ?

Jansson has been on Saints radar for some time and there was some speculation back in the summer that Saints might try to hijack Leeds deal to make the player's loan from Torino last season permanent.

That turned out not to be the case and Leeds signed him for £4 million from the Serie A side whom he joined in 2014 from Malmo.

His time at Torino was not completely successful and he was used as the back up central defender leading him to seek more game time resulting in a loan deal to Leeds on a season long loan in August 2016 and following a great season for them a permanent deal last summer.

Saints have been monitoring and may make a bid, his agent has claimed that Jansson will not leave Leeds mid season and will see out this campaign, however that could be agent speak for "he wants to go, come and get him".

Whilst that may be the case, Leeds be willing to sell will be a different matter, they are right up there in the promotion race in the Championship and whilst automatic promotion may be a bit beyond them, a play off spot is within their grasp.

So it would take an exceptional offer to get them to sell and even that would probably not be enough given their ambitions, so I don't expect this one to happen.

Great move for him: guarantees him the same level of football next season

Why would he want to come to us when there is every chance that Leeds will be in the Premier League and we will be in the Championship.

It’s irrelevant, the club aren’t pursuing defenders. All the focus is on attacking players. With Hoedt, Yosh and Stephens plus Bednarek (and Gardos/ Bertrand in an emergency) the central defensive positions are covered even allowing us to occasionally play with three. Might change in the summer.

Carrillo appears to be the priority, Promes sounds like wishful thinking (but would be a big statement) and with Tadic, Boufal, Redmond, Ward-Prowse, Long, McQueen, Sims, Pied and Davis we have a lot of attacking and creative midfield options.

If experience tells us anything it's about the money not loyalty to the club an supporters. Offer him £40k a week and he'll sign tomorrow. I'm sure Bednarek wouldn't mind a move to get more game time so why not offer him as part of the deal.

If we offer them three times what he's worth, they'll probably let him go but I don't think they'd be stupid enough to take Bednarek or Gardos in part exchange. They can get better than that.

I think Leeds may be quite keen to get rid of Jansson after his performance in their 3-4 defeat to Millwall today. He's just deflected into his own goal a shot from ex-Pompey player Jed Wallace to give Millwall victory.

Jansson ..or A.N. OTHER (?).. YES... we need another CB, (but not before 31st January).
Gardos is out of contract in the summer, and we'll need to replace him anyway.

Our back line is not the worst in the Prem. and at least (until tomorrow afternoon), we've only had 3 or 4 really bad results, but what we really need is ...at least 2 new strikers...who know how to score goals.

We are in this position because for all their efforts.. our present strike force (sounds silly ) has had over 200 shots and failed to convert even 10% of them. For all their effort and sweat, few of them can hit "the proverbial barndoor" after they leave the training ground, although the videoes from Staplewodd make them all look like Brazilians.

The only dependable / regular / striker is Charlie Austin and "whenever" he does return
let's not expect to see the rip-roaring model we had back in the Autumn.

As a 60 year fan, I've been through this (too many) times before, but if we don't pull out of this situation, it will be a very sad time for all concerned, and once again we will see yet another queue of departures, especially from international players who don't want to be left playing for a Championship club during a World Cup year.
