Rathbone joins Rotherham
Thursday, 5th Aug 2021 12:03 by AtThePeake

Rochdale fans were disappointed to hear news of Ollie Rathbone's move to Rotherham on Wednesday for an undisclosed fee.

The box-to-box midfielder had become something of a fan's favourite at Spotland for his all-action displays in the centre of the park.

But with Rotherham United looking to bounce back to the Championship at the first time of asking after relegation last season, it seems the deal was too good to turn down for both Dale and the 23 year old this time around.

Having come through the youth ranks at Manchester United, Rathbone joined Rochdale following his departure from Old Trafford in 2016 and went on to make 183 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring 15 goals.

Those five years included some memorable moments and Rathbone was involved in famous cup clashes against the likes of Newcastle, Tottenham and his former club Manchester United.

There were also some fine and important goals along the way, including a late winner at Accrington back in 2019 and the only goal of the game in the 1-0 victory over Blackpool in one of his final matches for the club.

A tireless runner who gave his all for the cause in every game, Rathbone is sure to be one of the players of this era that is most fondly remembered by Dale supporters in years to come.
