CCF Rebooted No.15 - Robbie Williams
Tuesday, 14th Sep 2021 14:52 by AtThePeake

Our round-up of players who made their debuts in the 2010/2011 season finishes with a look at former left-back Robbie Williams.

Position: Left-back

Arrived from: Stockport County

Played : 2011

Appearances : 9

Goals : 0

Left for: Plymouth Argyle

As Dale defenders continued to do Something Stupid on a weekly basis, manager clearly wanted to Entertain You, the Dale supporters, by bringing in a Better Man at left-back towards the end of the 2010/2011 campaign.

Gone were the Lazy Days for the Dale backline as the Strong defender Robbie Williams arrived from Stockport on a short-term deal to help the side Feel their way to a top half third-tier finish for the first time in an Eternity.

Okay, enough now, before I Come Undone.

With former Stockport team-mate Owain Fon Williams having left Stockport to move to Spotland on a short-term deal, namesake Robbie made his way across Manchester at a similar time, although didn't make his debut til later in the season.

Having started his career at Barnsley, where he made 66 appearances in five seasons (plus nine on loan at Blackpool) Williams had since spent time with Huddersfield before a 22-game stint with Stockport, which came to an end in the January of 2011.

During his time at Spotland, the Pontefract-born full-back would make nine appearances, without particularly impressing going forward, although it is worth noting that the team kept four clean sheets in his first five games at the club.

Williams had a decent knack of scoring at his former clubs (and after leaving Dale) but never looked particularly dangerous going forward. Indeed, most of those goals at the likes of Barnsley and Huddersfield did come from set-pieces.

He could best be described as solid if unspectacular, but in reality Joe Widdowson, the other left-back at the club, offered more in terms of physicality and quality with the ball, even if he maybe lacked the experience and steadiness that Williams would bring towards the end of the campaign.

After leaving Spotland, Williams played 42 times for Plymouth Argyle, before moving to Ireland to see out the remainder of his career.

Having scored 11 times in just over 100 league games for Limerick, the left-back would sign short-term deals with Cork City and Galway United before returning to Markets Field for one final season while coaching the U19 squad, before joining Limerick & District League outfit Pike Rovers.

This concludes the list of players who made their debuts in 2010/2011, so hold onto your hats, because 2011/2012 is about to come next... and it's going to be fun for nobody.
