Petit: Arsene is doing a great job but now he has to win trophies

Wenger is the greatest Arsenal manager of all time and yet there remains an underlying tension amongst some fans that erupted at various points last season due to the recent lack of silverware.

Emmanuel Petit has outlined these concerns in a special programme on Radio 5 that will be aired at 8pm tonight to celebrate Wenger’s 60th birthday:

"After five years without winning a trophy it's surprising that Arsene has stayed in charge of the team. When the manager doesn't win a trophy for four years at any of the other big clubs in Europe they are fired.

"Arsene has the confidence from the board and fans because they know it's a new generation of players and if he can keep the nucleus of the team together they will win.

"But if you go five years without a trophy, some of the players will think, 'I don't want to waste time any more, I want to win trophies somewhere else.’

"If Arsene continues to miss out on trophies year after year, I think the board and the shareholders will take action, if not the fans and the press before that.

Petit has experience of working under the boss at Monaco and at Highbury and has given a fair assessment of his mentor’s current predicament. As much as Wenger is loved by the majority of fans, there is only so long he can go without winning another trophy.
