Saints V Millwall Head To Head

A fixture that goes back over 100 years but has never been a really regular occurrence in the league

Saints and Millwall last met only two seasons ago in League 1, the St Mary's game was on the opening day of the season and a Saints side not yet buoyed by many new faces earned a 1-1 draw courtesy of a Matt Paterson goal.

The away game in January saw a much changed Saints side from August and a tight game looked to have been won when Rickie Lambert hit home a storming free kick as the game headed into injury time, but the lead lasted only a minute and the home side equalised, this could perhaps be seen as the day when Saints Promotion challenge hit the rails and Millwall's went up a notch, history shows that they went up via the play offs.

In 2005/06 we met them in the Championship and it was two victories for Saints both 2-0, Millwall departed for League One at the end of the season.

In 88/89 & 89/90 Wall enjoyed two seasons in the top flight, in their first season they did well and it was honours even both home (2-2) and away (1-1), on the opening day of 89/90 they won at the Dell 2-1 but it would be a false dawn for them and they would be relegated at the end of the season, however in Mid December they drew 2-2 with us at the Old Den.

In the 70's we met them for three seasons out of four, but out of the six games we beat them only once that on a rare Friday night game at the Dell 3-2, otherwise it went mainly Millwall's way, even in our promotion season they beat us twice, 3-0 at the Den and 3-2 in February 1978 that put a big ddent in our promotion challenge.

I the league we have met them in 23 seasons, most in the period late 40's early 50's we have won 19 of these games, Millwall 16 and 11 draws.

In the FA Cup its Saints way, with 5 wins 4 draws and no Millwall wins. Likewise the league cup where its 1 Saints win and two draws, that might sound strange but in 85/86 Saints met Millwall firstly in the league cup, after a 0-0 draw at both Millwall and the Dell Saints won on penalties, although in the record books its down as a draw.

Ironically that season Saints also played them in the FA Cup, it was another 0-0 draw at the Dell before Saints squeezed through 1-0 at the DEn in the replay.
