Saints V Wolves The Preview

Can Saints keeep their record against Wolves going

Saints havent lost to Wolves in nearly 30 years, although its fair to say that for the best part of 20 of them we didnt actually play them.

Tomorrow Saints take on the Midlands side in the second of three difficult games against promotion favourites and its going to be a hard task.

The defeat against Bristol City was a blow but on reflection there are several plus's about it, firstly it wasnt a defeat in what had become our regular manner, against the likes of Swansea, Coventry, Watford & QPR we had enjoyed the lions share of chances (OK not Swansea) and had paid the price for poor defending at crucial moments.

Against Bristol it was a game that could quite easily have gone either way and a game of few chances, yes we missed a couple but in the main we looked fairly solid, a draw would have been a fair result.

We can hopefully build on that, hopefully Jan Poortvliet has realised the error of his ways in defence and with Morgan Scheiderlin avaliable again it should give us more of a flowing look in midfield.

Of course Wolves are riding high and are clear at the top of the division, but that doesnt mean they are unbeatable, indeed they have conceded 23 goals, this is only two less than Saints and exactly the same as the bottom club Doncaster Rovers, the difference of course is the number they are scoring, 37 is Reading excepted, 13 more than any other club, the difference between Wolves and the rest of the promotion hopefuls is that they dont draw many, in fact only one game in the league all season.

One Saints fan hoping Wolves will win is Sam Vokes who is playing for Wolves this season after his transfer from AFC Bournemouth, Sam's father appeared on the cover of the ver first Ugly Inside 20 years ago and indeed young Sam would often be seen with his Father around St Mary's in his replica kit up until a couple of years back when his career with the Cherries took off.

Its going to be a tough couple of games, in truth if Saints could take one point from the six available it wouldnt be a disaster and anything more would be a bonus, one thing is for sure with two sides that have shipped 48 goals and scored 52 between them in 32 games, it shouldnt be a nil nil draw, the average per game is over 3, but who will get the lions share at St Mary's, if saints fans dont want to watch the team they may have many reasons, but staying away from St Mary's tomorrow wont be for the excuse that it wont be an entertaining game
