Wanyama Back In Contention
Its the news that Saints fans wanted to hear, that Victor Wanyama is on the verge of a return to the first team after nearly two months out.
Victor Wanyama has come through a week of training with the first team squad and is back in contention for a place in the team for this weekend's FA Cup match against Yeovil.
I would be very surprised if he started the game though, with Arsenal looming on the horizon and an injury crisis in full swing, I would expect him to have a place on the bench with the plan to be to try and give him a run out nearing the end of the game to sweep out the cobwebs and get him used to the pace of a game again.
After such a long lay off it would be silly to expect him to complete two full games in quick succession.
However for his return against Arsenal I would like to see Mauricio Pochettino thinking outside the box on this one, with problems in the centre of defence with Lovren out and doubts over Fonte after his being allegedly assaulted by Osvaldo, Saints are thin in this area. Wanyama has played as a central defender before and with his mobility and ability to win the ball he would make a perfect replacement for Lovren, given that Jack Cork is in fine form in the centre of midfield I feel we would be stronger as a team overall if we did this rather than just do the obvious and replace Cork with Wanyama.
Whatever the manager decides to do though its good to see another influential player back to fitness.
