Saints Go For a Very Rare Three Away Wins In A Row

It is a long time since Saints have won three games in the top flight, 22 years to be exact, but on Saturday they have the chance to repeat that feat.

The last time Saints won three away games in the top flight on the bounce was way back in the 1991/92 season when ironically enough it was a trip to Upton Park that completed the trio.

When Saints visited Manchester City for a televised game in March 1992, things did not look good, although they had won the last two games both at the Dell 1-0, they still sat in 21st place in the last season before the Premier league and were fighting for their lives to be in the Premier for the first season and the riches that it promised.

An Iain Dowie goal gave Saints a victory that they didnt deserve out of 89 minutes of pressure but the Saints fans up there didnt care it was three points.

A couple of weeks later and it was up to Everton for a night match, another 1-0 win this time Glenn Cockerill scoring the vital goal.

The trio of wins was completed in yet another night match with yet another 1-0 win, when Micky Adams volleyed home a Le Tissier cross with two minutes to go in a vital relegation clash, this win didnt make a difference to the Hammers come the final game, they would have still been relegated if they had won, but it did signal a swing towards Saints safety, in all games they had now won 7 out of the last 8, five of these being 1-0 scorelines and the other two 2-1.

Since then we have had quite a few back to back wins in the Premier League but never three in a row, so now is a good time to start.

Our sojourn outside of the top flight didn't see us hit that magical three in a row on the road till we dropped to League one and then it was only in our final away games in the promotion winning second season that we won 3 on the trot to overtake Huddersfield, winning firstly at Brighton 2-1 with a late comeback, then at Brentford 3-0 and finishing at Plymouth Argyle with a 3-1 win to virtually seal promotion.

Back In the Championship we again managed three straight away wins just at the right time, starting with a 3-0 win at Watford we then won 1-0 at leeds in a game that we should really have lost 7-1 if it hadn't been for Kelvin Davis and we completed the hat trick when we won 3-2 at Millwall, but we didnt stop there following that up at Hull with a 2-0 triumph, however it would not be five in a row, a disastrous reverse at Blackpool 3-0 ending the run.

So as you can see three away wins in a row have been a bit more frequent in the past few years, but overall and especially in the top flight they have not been very common, so all those up at Upton Park should savour the moment if we win.
