Rowlands’ Irish injury heartbreak
Four years since his last call up, Martin Rowlands has been forced to withdraw from the international squad through injury.
This is terrible news for Rowly who picked up an ankle injury at the Republic’s Portuguese training camp yesterday. He impressed in Giovanni Trapattoni’s first two games against local sides in Portugal and was all set to play a part in the friendlies against Serbia and Columbia in the coming weeks.
Rowlands’ call up came on the back of a terrific season with QPR culminating in the club’s Player of the Year award. He will now return to W12 for scans and treatment on the injury, it’s not yet clear how serious it is or whether it will affect his participation in pre-season training which starts in just over a month.
QPR physio Paul Hunter told the club’s official website: “I’ve spoken to Martin and obviously he is disappointed to be leaving the squad behind. He’s had a scan on his ankle and we’re awaiting the results from the Irish medical team.”
Damien Delaney remains with the squad and will win his first full cap tomorrow against Serbia at Croke Park. The Irish then travel to West London to face the Columbians at Craven Cottage.
