Saints At Manchester City The Verdict

The final day dream was not to be, but Saints gave a great account of themselves up at Manchester City that augurs well for next season.

This was never going to be an easy game and Manchester City were in no mood to lay down and die even though they had nothing to play for, in these situations all you can do is ask for your side to give its all and that is what Saints did.

That being the case no Saints supporter can have any complaints about anyone who pulled on the shirt on Sunday.

It should be remembered that we went into the game without three key players, Fraser Forster, Morgan Schneiderlin and Dusan Tadic have all played vital roles this season and it was asking a lot for any side to be without three players of their cailbre and still go to City and win.

This game was though a celebration of what a great season it has been, ok 7th was disappointing from the point of view of where we were a few weeks ago, but it is still a triumph and we now have some good foundations to build on.

The game itself saw Saints go at City in a way that they have lacked away from home in recent weeks, but once Frank Lampard put the home side ahead on the half hour it was always going to be hard, but with news of Liverpool being slaughtered and Spurs 1-0 up at Everton there was always hope.

Kelvin Davis made his 300th appearance for Saints and marked it with one wonder save, however you have to wonder what might have been if Fraser Forster had not been injured or we had had truly quality back up in goal.

Sadly the cruellest cut came right at the end, City's second goal in the final minute did not alter the result, but what it did do was deny Saints the joint meanest defence in the Premier League, that goal being the 33rd we had let in in the Premier League and it turned out to be one more than Chelsea, exactly a third of those goal came in the final six games when the Villa game was the only time we did not concede two goals in a match.

So now we must watch the cup final as Arsenal fans and hope that for once this season the luck goes our way, even if it is Arsenal's
