Saints Draw At Charlton But Lose On Penalties

Saints Academy side played their first game in the Checkatrade Trophy this evening and earned a draw, however the game still went to penalties.

Saints earned a point at Charlton Athletic this evening in the Checkatrade Trophy in a goalless draw, however the new rules of the competition state that although both teams get a point, a penalty shootout is held in which the winners gain a bonus point.

Sadly for Saints they lost 5-4 with goalkeeper Alex McCarthy missing the last kick.

It wasn't a good night from the spot for the Saints youngsters captained by Harrison Reed who missed from the spot in normal time on the 20 minute mark.

But this was more about giving some of our younger players a chance to test their mettle against experienced pros and from that point, it was a good workout with our Academy players coming through a tough test to match their League One opponents.

Although Martin Hunter will be disappointed with the ultimate ending, he will pleased at how his team came through the game and it will tell him and indeed the first team coaches at the club which of the squad might be pushing for a breakthrough this season.

Saints team: McCarthy, Reed (c), Stephens, Olomola, Jones, McQueen, Sims, Hesketh, Valery, Gape, Johnston. Subs: Parkes, Wood, Cook, O'Connor, Rowthorn, N'Lundulu, Mdlalose.
