Wolves abandon Leigertwood chase

Championship leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers have abandoned their attempt to sign Mikele Leigertwood from QPR according to reports in the Midlands.

Wolves are currently top of the table by five points but have endured a difficult January transfer window so far. They were priced out of the race to sign Marvin Elliott from Bristol City and John Jo O’Toole from Watford, lost Rangers striker Alan Gow to a failed medical and have now baulked at the asking price for our own Mikele Leigertwood.

Legs was the first signing made by QPR following the arrival of Flavio Briatore at the club, arriving from Sheffield United for a fee in the region of £900k. QPR were looking for at least another half million on top of that if they were to sell him this January and Wolves have decided to look elsewhere.

Three games ago many QPR fans probably would have been in favour of selling him but Leigertwood has been outstanding against Coventry, Burnley and Derby in the last week or so and with Martin Rowlands now out for the rest of the season his presence has taken on added importance. That change in attitude from supporters says a lot for the former Wimbledon and Crystal Palace man’s inconsistency in a QPR shirt – at times his touch is poor and he looks laboured, in other games he completely dominates and has scored a number of eye catching goals from deep positions including one at Derby on Saturday.

Elsewhere Wayne Routledge has been talking about his early impressions of life at QPR. The winger, who scored his first goal for the club at Pride Park on Saturday, told Teamtalk: “"I have not played consistently for a long time so for me to play games is a great feeling. The potential here is amazing. It's a London club and with the backing of the owners, Rangers have the potential to be a massive Premier League club."
