Club Sponsor In Van Dijk Gaffe On Social Media !
Arron Sanders ponders Virgin Media getting into a little bit of a muddle on social media over Van Dijk.
Southampton Football Club's main sponsor got themselves into a bit of a mess on social media yesterday, when their official Twitter account responded to a tweet from an Everton fan.
The tweet send by a Evertonian by the name Adam, insinuated that people would boycott the company due to their links to Saints over defender Virgil Van Dijk. Although just why that would upset Everton fans is unclear.
Virgin Media responded " We do sponsor Southampton Football Club but that's about as far as it goes. Van Dijk would look better in blue anyway ;) "
Now this may have just been an attempt at banter gone wrong by the Virgin Media employee but I for one am not at all happy would allow for such a tweet be sent out from our sponsors official account.
This comment from a company with a reputation such as Virgin Media's, is not going to go down well with Saints fans at all given the recent issues with Liverpool over the player.
Virgin have been a great sponsor for the club with travel and ticket initiatives for the supporters, so the Virgin employee who replied was seemingly not aware of just how much Virgin are involved with the club, but I would not expect any drastic action over this, although there could be an apology via their Twitter account to the clubs supporters even if it issued in a light hearted manner.
Social media such as twitter allows major companies to interract with the public in a way that was unheard of only a few years ago, but sometimes this can backfire on them.
Are any of you fans annoyed by the Virgin media's tweet regarding Van Dijk? or is it just an attempt at banter gone wrong?
