Saints At Huddersfield Town The Verdict
Saints lacked drive in this game but came to life in the final 15 minutes and could have won the game with a flurry of late chances.
Huddersfield as expected were up for it from the final whistle backed by a noisy crowd who roared them on, but the rarely looked like breaking Saints down despite the fact that we seemed determined to hand them a goal or two with slack marking and poor passing.
The best chance fell to Ryan Bertrand who clean through on goal put his shot wide, at the other end Forster made a smart block from close range when he read the situation perfectly, there was one flap from him although in fairness he did not get any calls from his defence and unsure if there was anyone at the far post went for a ball he really should have left.
If you thought Saints could not get worse then you were in for a shock they could, again it was a tale of poor passing and a failure to impose ourselves on the game.
Mauricio Pellegrino's substitutions puzzled most and lead to boos when Manolo Gabbiadini was taken off, but on reflection they worked as in the final 15 minutes or so we came to life.
A flurry of chances almost lead to a goal with Ryan Bertrand again having the best one with his header being cleared off the line, most of the chances seemed to be created by Shane Long whose running put the home defenders under pressure in a way we had failed to do earlier.
All in all a disappointing game, but we are a work in progress and the new manager is slowly putting together the team he wants, that being the case 5 points from the first 3 games is a good return and a good base to build on, Saints fans need to be patient in the coming weeks, yes we are playing poorly but we are still getting results and that has to be good.
