Saints V Bournemouth The Preview

Saints take on the Cherries hoping for a change of luck and their first win at home in the Premier League in five months to kick start a survival bid.

There are many reasons why Saints are in the bottom four with a sizeable chunk of Saints supporters blaming all of them at once, but there are also reasons to still believe that Saints can still pull clear.

The main one is that Saints are individually not a bad team and can as they proved in the first 70 minutes against Chelsea a couple of weeks ago put in a blistering display, the problem then was that bad luck and a lack of concentration meant that Chelsea could go for the jugular and do so with clinical finishing.

But Bournemouth are not Chelsea, they are a team that seem to play in short bursts, they either get well beaten or they snatch points in the closing stages and that will ultimately keep them up.

So our job today is to try and put them to bed early and when there two power surges happen in the game make sure we deal with them.

Our problem though is defending, that has been the problem all season, many will say it is a lack of goals, but they are wrong it is poor marking and poor defending, this season has been a series of goals handed to the opposition in a soft manner right from the start of the season.

If we had cut out the poor marking and lapses in concentration that cost us points against the likes of Burnley, Huddersfield, Palace and Arsenal at home, all games we lead in and then threw away points by giving the visitors an unmarked attempt on goal from close range then we would already be safe, those four games alone saw 8 points thrown down the drain, just how much do we need those points now !

So for once this season we have to put in a clinical display, a little like our win against Everton five months ago, incredibly our last home win in the Premier League, the fact that despite only a solitary win away from home since then and we are still not dead and buried shows that under it all we do have the ability to pull off what looks an unlikely escape, but is still possible.

So today needs to be a concerted effort from everyone, the manager, the players and the supporters, we need an air of positivity at St Mary's this afternoon, we all need to give 90 minutes of that and then we can argue about what has gone right or wrong after.

I am a Saints supporter, I support the team it it's moments of crisis, it is as simple as that !
