Saints V Manchester United The Preview

Saints haven't beaten Manchester United at home for 15 years, this is as good a time as any to end that run.

In the old days at the Dell a game against Manchester United was the most eagerly awaited and both the crowd and the players seemed to raise their games and we achieved some notable wins, but since the move to St Mary's things changed a little.

Since our return to the Premier League they have visited us 6 times and they have won 4 of them, indeed in total they have played at St Mary's 13 times and we have won just once, a 1-0 win courtesy of a James Beattie goal in August 2013, that being the only other time we have taken a point of them making it only 5 points from 10 Premier League games, a record similar to our season so far.

So we really could do with the three points this evening more than any other time bar when they relegated us on the final day of the 2004/05 season.

The problem is that we can't see where the next win is coming from, Mark Hughes is not working out, the club need to do something fast I'm afraid, so this could be his last game in charge should we lose.

I haven't a clue what Hughes will do in his team selection and that is not a good thing to say, it will be fairly predictable in many ways, but there is always something changed mainly in the centre of defence where there has been no settled partnership since the final day of the 2015/16 season and in my opinion this is where all our problems today stem from, failure to recruit well in that position.

The only positive thing is that United themselves aren't brilliant so they are beatable.

Will this be the day the season turns ? the answer is yes it could be but whether it sees us out of the bottom three or Mark Hughes leaving St Mary's we will soon find out.
