A Rough Guide To Burnley

With the transfer window due to shut on Thursday and all the excitement running up to it, we bring you the rough guide a little earlier in the week than usual.

Its a long haul up to Burnley with only Newcastle being longer this season, but a good Saints following is expected with it being the opening day of the season.

By Car

Its fairly simple, take the normal North West route via the M6, keep on going till you reach junction 29 and then take the M65, exit this motorway at Junction 10 and follow signs to Towneley Hall, this road will lead you right to the ground.

In terms of mileage it is around 260 miles and you should allow around 5 hours to do it as the M6 has a lot of roadworks between Stoke and Sandbach services.

There is a car park at the Cricket Ground next to Turf Moor for £6, Away fans are encouraged to park next to Burnley Fire Station on Belvedere Road so the Police can keep them in one place after the game. this costs £5 otherwise its street parking

By Train

There are two stations Burnley Central & Burnley Manchester Road, both are around 15-20 minutes walk from the ground.

The Away Section.

Saints fans will be in the David Fishwick Stand which is a large covered area behind one of the goals, although it was built around 40 years or so ago its quite spacious and with the front seats raised above the pitch it offers decent views albeit with the odd pillar or two, although as the stand is unlikely to be full these can be easily avoided.

Usually Burnley allocate half of this stand to visitors approximately 2,100, which should be sufficient for Saints, however if neccessary the other half of the stand can be used doubling this number.

Although the concourse underneath is spacious for an older stand it can still get quite cramped for larger away supports, the usual arrray of pies etc is available as is alcohol.
There is also a marquee attached to the back of the stand inside the ground selling beer, meaning that usually it is the shortest queue I have ever encountered for a pint at half time.

Eating & Drinking

Right behind the away end is the cricket club and visiting supporters are welcome in there, indeed many park there.

The Queen Victoria is about 100 yards going away from the ground from Burnley Fire station and due to its close vicinity to the away car park is usually the pub of choice for away supporters.

The Turf Pub on Yorkshire Street (The main drag from the town centre is best avoided as are most of the other pubs on this street, indeed many will only let in home fans anyway.

Likewise the town centre has some good pubs but also some that are advisable not to try, Burnley have a small but sizeable pocket of troublemakers although they will usually not be interested in the normal colours wearing away fans.
