A penalty shoot out holds no worries for Freddie Woodman today
Freddie Woodman has received many plaudits this season, his clean sheet record, ability to pass on the ground to his defence and awareness when he has to come out of his area. These qualities are most certainly the basic requirements in top flight football, but there’s another record not many have commented on.
In his career Woodman has faced 25 penalties and saved 9. It’s a stat that any goalkeeper would be proud of. However, at Swansea he has saved 5 out of the last 9. Anyone who has been a critic of Freddie at times this season will most certainly put their money on the swans today if penalties are the decided outcome of this play off semi final.
It’s possible it could well happen, as there are no away goals in the play off semi finals.
Under the guidance of 49 year old England goalkeeping coach Martin Margetson who has gained experience at Crystal Palace, West Ham and as Wales national coach Freddie’s improvement this year is not in doubt. And if today’s game has a sniff of a penalty in it be that in play or in a shoot out. Put your money on the Woodman, golden gloves, confidence personified, and the best in the Championship.
