Tough Decisions From Matt Grimes If He Is To leave Swansea For Southampton

Matt grimes is said to be the first name on the list that Russell Martin will present to Saints when he finally arrives at St Mary's, but will the player himself be so keen to join his soon to be ex manager on the South Coast ?

Our fellow Fans Network website SwanseaIndependent have been speculating whether Matt Grimes will be joining Russell Martin at St Mary's in the coming weeks, they suggest that although Martin will be keen to bring the 27 year old who was a key player in the Swans resurgence to the brink of the play offs last season, that the player himself might put family before career.

They cite mental health issues earlier in the year , along with the fact that he has a partner from South Wales as well as a young family and might not be too keen to uproot them.

They also suggest that the revolving door policy at Southampton FC over the past 8 months might also be a factor in the equation for Grimes and that he might consider that like James Bree who joined Nathan Jones at Saints by also leaving Luton Town, only to find himself ostracised a few weeks later, Martin's tenure as Saints boss might be only temporary.

The Swansea Independent also claim that there will be a lot of pressure on Martin for instant results, not just from the owners Sport Republic, but also the fans, they say:

"Sport Republic who are now running matters at St Marty’s want nothing but a return to the top flight. Three losses on the trot for Martin next season and the dissent from the stands will be palpable."

" No matter what Sport Republic say Martin won’t get anywhere near the time he had at Swansea. During that poor run last season (Martin at Swansea) they would have sacked him three times over."

They also point out that during a loan spell at Leeds United earlier in his career his Mother took to social media to berate Leeds fans for their treatment of her son, Grimes has a solid family environment around him and he will be keen to keep that.

So are Swansea Independent correct in their summary of the situation, or are they clutching at straws in hoping to keep a player who is very highly rated by the Swans supporters and who has been a key player over the past few seasons.

In many respects a similar situation that James Ward Prowse is now facing, does he trade a comfortable position at St Mary's for far more money at another club in the Premier League, will the short term gain outweigh the longer term benefits of staying put.

It was 4 in a row for Tonda Eckert & his Saints side, another polished performance that pushed us up to 11th but more importantly to the fringes of the play off spots, posing the question how a team and it's players who were so poor just 3 weeks or so ago can be so different now.
