A Rough Guide To Leeds United

A big big game for just Leeds now, although by Saturday the odds on them going up automatically might have changed slightly so here is all the info for those travelling Saints fans who are still going,

The Ground

Elland Road is dominated by the East Stand on one side of the stadium, this holds 15,000 fans and was built in 1992, incredibly this is the newest part of the stadium with all the other 3 sides built well before that date, indeed aside from the East Stand the next newest stand dates from 1973.

This means that is has the feel of an old style football ground and in most areas it has been a case of seats bolted on to old terracing meaning poor sight lines especially in areas with pillars etc.

The stadium holds just under 38,000 in total.

The Away Section

Visiting supporters are housed in the corner of the John Charles Stand, this is an older structure and means that as mentioned earlier the sight lines are not the best with many seats having the view interrupted by pillars, it is also the lowest stand of the stadium, meaning that there is not a very elevated view of play, think of the away section at Goodison park and it has a similar feel.

There is the usual food and drink available in the concourse.

Pubs For Away Fans

Leeds is not a city that has embraced modern football culture totally and they still have a little aversion to embracing the ethos of peace and love, so visiting fans are advised to use caution when wearing colours outside the ground and in the surrounding areas.

There is a small away fans only bar called Howards just by the away turnstiles where you need to show your away ticket to gain entrance and that will probably be the best bet for those coming up by coach.

The Old Peacock pub right outside the ground is not advised for away supporters, at least not those wearing colours.

The nearest away fan pub used to be Drysalters and was used by quite a few Saints supporters in previous years, however according to google maps this pub has now closed down permanently.

Otherwise it is a question of finding a pub and taking pot luck, as I have said the locals are not renowned for a friendly welcome near the ground.

Getting There & Parking

From The South
Leave the M1 at Junction 43 and take the M621, towards Leeds City Centre. You will pass the ground on your left and then you need to leave at the next Junction 1 and turn left onto the A6110 ring road. Take the next left onto Elland Road for the ground. Just as you go under a railway bridge there are entrances on either side to a couple of very large car parks (£6).

A good tip for is to park in Car Park A. They normally put away fans coaches here. From here we were back on the M621 within 10 minutes of coming out of the ground.

By Train

Leeds Railway Station is around two miles and at best a 35 minute walk from Elland Road.

The best option is to either take a taxi or one of the shuttle buses, that run from near the station to the ground. . The pick up point is in Sovereign Street, opposite the Hilton Hotel (on Neville Street), about a two minute walk from Leeds train station. The buses drop you off at the ground on Lowfields Road, at the corner of the South and East Stands.
