Saints In Talks With Ex Brighton Assistant Manager To Join Coaching Staff

The crucial appointment this summer at St Mary's will be the assistant manager to Will Still, with the new Southampton boss inexperienced in English football, it is important to have someone with nous in the dug out and on the training ground.

The name being mentioned by footballleagueworld.co.uk is former Bristol Rovers Manager and also assistant manager at Brighton & currently Luton Town is Paul Trollope who is said to be intalks with Southampton.

At the moment it is unclear whether Trollope would be recruited as Still's assistant, or just as one of the coaching staff.

It is not a name that will excite some Saints supporters, but he is a man who has been there and done it, for the job that Saints require.

The 53 year old has experience as a player albeit mainly in the lower divisions, but he helped both Derby & Fulham to promotion in the Premier League.

After moving to Bristol Rovers as a player he graduated to caretaker manager and then first team coach,/manager, in his second season he led Rovers to promotion from League two via the play offs.

After 5 years at the club he was sacked and his next job was at Birmingham City as a first team coach to work with Chris Hughton in July 2011, after a year Hughton left for Premier League Norwich City and Trollope went too.

Trollope then left to be first team coach at Cardiff City and after the sacking of the manager Trollope was appointed his successor, but didn't last long and was sascked after just 12 matches in charge.

He wasn't out of work long joining his previous boss Chris Hughton at Brighton and would help the club win promotion to the Premier League League in May 2017, he would be there till May 2019 when he left alongside the sacked Hughton.

Next up would be joining Hughton at Nottingham Forest but again after Hughton was sacked, Trollope went too.

The next job was in November 2022 when he joined new Luton Town manager Rob Edwards who had recently replaced Nathan Jones and again Trollope would have a promotion to the Premier League on his CV by the end of that season.

He is still at Kenilworth Road and it said that Saints are now in talks to bring him to St Mary's

This probably won't excite many, there will be cries of doing things on the cheap etc, but for those that want a manager who has been there and done it with the job we need and that is at this moment promotion to the Premier League, Trollope is your man and also has coaching experience in the Premier League should we win promotion.

As mentioned it is unclear at the moment what Trollope's role will be, will it be just part of the coaching staff or will it be as an assistant to Will Still, either way he is a man who knows the Championship and more importantly how to get out of it.
