Southampton V Gillingham The Verdict

Saints took on Gillingham behind closed doors at Staplewood in a fixture that consisted of two 60 minute halves with Will Still again as at Eastleigh playing a different team in each of them.

The first hour segment was won 1-0 by Southampton with Cameron Archer firing in his second goal of pre season, following on from Saturday's winner at the Silverlake.

The second segment was essentially won 3-1 by Saints, to make the final score overall 4-1, Ross Stewart and Tyler Dibling making it 2-0 for the 2nd half and 3-0 overall, before the Gills reduced the deficit from a penalty, but Kuryu Matsuki had the final say notching the 4th Saints goal of the day to end the scoring and the 4-1 win.

The Saints side for the first half was

Saints: Ramsdale; Bree, Stephens (Captain), Quarshie, Welington; Downes, Smallbone, Armstrong (Dibling, 30), Fraser, Robinson; Archer.

At the break it was all change, Tyler Dibling aside who had come on as a sub in the first game half way through and stayed on the pitch for the 2nd half, but it had a strange twist, Charlie Taylor took the Captains armband, suggesting that perhaps Will Still sees him as part of the squad for next season.

Saints: Bazunu; Sugawara, Wood, Taylor, Manning (Kayi Sanda, 45); Matsuki, Charles, Edozie, Dibling (Aribo, 15), Brereton Diaz; Stewart.

Will Still has now see most of his squad in action, only Armel Bella_Kotchap who again watched from the sidelines, Mateus Fernandes who returns to the squad on Wednesday and Jan Bednarek & Ronnie Edwards who came back to the squad late due to international duty are yet to get any game time in the two matches played so far.

Again with this being a game where it was about multiple changes it is hard to get anything concrete from it, but there were clearly some players who are determined to make an impact this season and that bodes well for the coming season.
