Skipper becomes latest to desert sinking ship

Club captain Johnny Mullins has become the latest player to quit the club as he has joined fellow League Two side Rotherham United on a free transfer. Mullins' switch to the Millers comes as a bit of a shock as he was expected to join a League One side at worst following his departure from Edgeley Park.

Despite the club having a shocking season in League One last time out, Johnny was head and shoulders above everyone else in terms of his performances and commitment to the cause and he was rightly named the clubs Player of the Season at the end of season awards bash. Swindon Town had been heavily linked with a move for Johnny during the summer and of course towards the end of last season, although he has surprised many County fans by opting to join Rotherham on a free transfer.

Mullins saw his County contract elapse in the summer following a two-year stint with the Hatters and he has decided to move on to pastures new following a turbulent spell at Edgeley Park. The start of his County career was quite positive as the team played some decent stuff and we were in the top ten in League One prior to the Christmas period in 2008. However things took a turn for the worst in the second half of the season, as the team started to slip down the League One table following a disastrous run of results under former manager Jim Gannon before the club went into administration in April 2009 with their League One status just about guaranteed.

County's dismal run of form continued throughout the 2009/10 season, as we finished bottom of the table after picking up just 5 wins all season in the League with the majority of those coming in the opening months. Playing for the club must have been hard as there were various restrictions imposed on the club due to the fact that we were still in administration, so it must have been hard for the players to perform to a reasonable standard without the use of proper facilities or knowledge whether the club would continue to be in existence.

Mullins appeared to be one player who gave his all week in week out despite the off field problems so we wish him well for his future career. Johnny has signed a two-year deal at the Don Valley Stadium and will join up with former County players Jason Taylor, Kevin Ellison and Adam Le Fondre who are all currently registered to the Millers.

During his time at Edgeley Park, Johnny made a total of 77 appearances and scored 4 goals.
