Saints Sculpture For The City

Southampton City Centre is to get a very special sculture to mark the 125th Anniversary of Southampton Football Club

The sculpture will depict Saints players wearing Saints shirts from the past and also doubles as a bench that will allow fans to have photos taken in a pose that mimics the traditional team picture.

Saints fans can hark back to the club’s win against Manchester United in the 1976 FA Cup final, as the trophy takes centre stage in the work and its great that it will be in the centre of the city, possibly around the revamped Guildhall Square

Commissioned by Southampton Solent University, the original sketch for the sculpture was produced by their director of marketing and communications, Trevor Thorne and Saints supporters will appreciate that a institution in the City is putting back something into the community around it, certainly in the past Saints have much neglected their own past with the Ted Bates statue having to be commissioned by supporters with the help of the club, rather than the Club itself.

Speaking to the Daily Echo he said: “We wanted to mark the club’s long history with something novel and fun. The crucial objective though, was to create something that Saints fans can get involved with.”

Vice chancellor Professor Van Gore said: “It’s imperative this landmark celebration is given a place in history in the city centre and we are delighted to be a part of that.”

Developers Barratt provided initial funding for the project and Swansfield Engineering in Fareham will now make the sculpture.

It’s due to be finished by the end of the year and unveiled in February.

Sadly Saints dont seem to be taking the 125ht anniversary with too much enthusiasm, as with the failure to remember Saints legend Ted Bates recently its sad to see that its left to others to erect a fitting tribute to the club.
