Evening all

Having indulged in plenty of DIY in recent times I thought it wise to set up a thread for hints and tips

My first one - if you're tiling consider using ready mixed adhesive as you can remove tiles if you make a fox pass.

Electric tile cutters are also a great bit of kit

Save hundreds if not thousands of pounds and possibly any relationship you are in by using approved, qualified traders.
Do not follow advice on forums frequented by people who just happen to support the same sports team as you do.

Sage advice. If I want something done to the house I’ll pay a professional to come and do it properly. If I can’t afford to pay someone, it waits until I can.

I don’t mind a bit of DIY but these days it is fairly low down on the priority list; I’ve always maintained that I can do a far superior job than a so called skilled person with the only problems being 1) it takes me double the time, and 2) I don’t have access to all of the tools required for some niche jobs. I picked my skills up from watching my dad but he lived and worked in a different generation to today’s corporate world.

In the absence of such spare time I have regularly turned to checkatrade.com which has proven its worth many times over for me. Until I started using them I found tradesmen unresponsive and of poor quality. However this social network seems to be floating the quality tradesmen to the fore.

If your glossing and leave the paint brush say overnight, put it in a plastic bag and wrap an elastic band around the handle, stops it drying out.
Oh and I fooking hate DIY, but always pleased to pass on useful info when and if required.👍😂

Well that depends Mr Thorpe.

If you have time and tools then you can do some things.

I would suggest that you do not fück about with gas, water or electric.

I'm happy with doing some bits of plumbing and wiring.

Find a good trades person, sage advice. Only problem is that they cost triple the price up here. Can't fault the joiner we used for the kitchen 😍

I can recommend a local sparky if you need one.

Dicky's best ever post.
Mind you I pay 400 quid a year for eleven useless tw@ts to play football on my behalf and it doesn't seem to be going so well.

Put tools away, don't put them down.
That way you know where to find them next time.
Personally, I have to keep reminding myself of this, as I try to sneak in an extra job rather than really finishing a job, putting away, tidying and cleaning.

Have to agree Dicky.

Quite a few years ago I made the mistake of tiling my bathroom, Mrs Lifelong still reminds me occasionally.

I don’t mind paying tradesmen for skilled work. Was recently quoted £600 to remove moss off the roof, empty gutters and clean fascias though. That was an incentive for me to get the ladders out!

What happened lifey?

I tiled my bathroom but got a builder in to get it ready. Literally pulled everything bar two plasterboards back to the brickwork!

It was a mess, I’ll have a go at most DIY tasks but I found tiling difficult, lack of the correct preparation didn’t help.
Had a new bathroom fitted a few years ago,by a local firm that did it all properly, made a hell of a difference.

Preparation is key you're spot on. With floor tiles I do recommend the powdered rapid set stuff. It's top notch and makes life so much easier. Wall tiling you can get away with pre mixed stuff over a smaller area. That's what I'm using for the splashback area in my kitchen.

It's the skilled stuff you only really need tradesmen for I reckon. Plumbing, electrics, decent carpentry, that sort of thing. Any mug can do the rest, especially ripping stuff down, you just need the time and the effort. Planning to batten and board over the dodgy ceiling of the old brick shed myself but I'll get someone in to replace the old window.

Yeah, Mrs Ux and I barely survived tiling the bathroom though. Tiling is a sod, doubly so if you're doing it with someone else.

PS if anyone knows a decent spark in Swansea, I'd be interested to know. Want to run a line up to the shed but the quote I had from the bloke who fitted my fuse box was outrageous.
