Can Saints End Up South Coast Top Dogs 15th Apr 2019 10:20
It might be a tall order but it is not impossible, but can Saints restore their position as the highest team on the South Coast in terms of League position. 5

I find it a bit embarrassing. This shouldn't be a target, it should be a given.
We are bigger than both Bournemouth and Brighton and have been in the PL for longer than either.
It just goes to show how much we have under performed in the last few years that they are both above us.

It's not embarrassing its reality, we should not be so arrogant that we have the automatic right to finish above them.

We need to rebuild ourselves now after last season and the start of this, it begins with small steps and the second after securing safety is to set our selves the next target that is to try and overhaul Bournemouth

A very arrogant post,

Aston Villa are bigger than you, as are Leeds, Sunderland, Sheff Wednesday, Derby, West Brom etc. Size and longevity have nothing to do with where your team currently belongs.

I dont get what you are saying here you quote Villa Leeds sheff weds derby etc as being bigger than us yet you then say size has nothing to do with it.

Where a team is in stature is all about where it is now, it is about the size of the support week in week out and league position and how long you have been there.

Hence clubs like Preston, Bury, Huddersfield, Burnley and Pompey are not seen as big clubs despite all having illustrious pasts long ago

Ahh just twigged it is all about trophies but it isn't is it !

Leeds are still a big club despite winning nothing in the last 27 years yet you are not despite winning the FA Cup 11 years ago.

The truth is that current stature is all about size and longevity, the game has changed in that winning the league is virtually impossible for anyone bar a big six club, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, that has become even more poignant even since Leicester won it three years ago.

You are right the modern football fan would still think Leeds and Villa bigger than us despite being in the Championship and that is mostly down to the size of the support, likewise Sunderland.

But most would not consider either Derby or West brom bigger as our support and longevity in the top flight outweighs the odd trophy won by them, the last being Derby some 44 years ago I think.

Where do you think Portsmouth sit in the list of big clubs, a genuine question, I would say under half way at present, where do you think and why

So, according to what you have just posted: Bournemouth are a bigger club than yours?

'Big' I would class as fanbase size and nothing else. It has nothing to do with trophy's. Yes P*mpey have been more 'successful' in the past, but you have never been and never will be as 'big' as us.

And once again our good friend 130 myths and one fact says what the football world is thinking.

Throughout the country Portmuff are recognised as a massive club that should be classed as up there alongside Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Not at all, as i said it is all about longevity and size, a few seasons in the top flight and a cup win as say yourselves, Wigan, Luton and Wimbledon have had in the first dont make you big clubs

Three years ago we finished above Liverpool and Chelsea that didnt make us a big club.

Are Pompey bigger than Bournemouth, I would say yes, they have both size and longevity over them in the last 30/40 years, are you bigger than Huddersfield, again I would say yes despite the fact that they have won more titles than you, currently have a bigger support and are in the Premier League, they perhaps now have the size but not the longevity.

Ive tried to be fair so lets hear where you truly feel you are and why, probably easier to say the clubs in the top two divisions you feel you are bigger than

This thread isn't wasn't about Pompey. It's was about the fact that one of your fans reckon because you are quite big you deserve to finish ahead of Brighton and Bournemouth. I am just reminding him that there are loads of bigger clubs in the leagues below.

Well, sorry to burst your balloon, but that would mean Pompey were always bigger than you up to around 1960.

And that would also mean that in 2002 that your club mysteriously became twice as big, almost overnight.

We have had a bigger ground than you for only the last 18 years and as you point out you were bigger than us for 40 years from 1920-1960, so how did the bestest fans in the world etc allow us to still have a bigger all time average attendance.

Yes in terms of trophies you p8ss all over us, but in terms of support we have the stats to prove who is top dog, a fella with a bell and a few of his mates may create a bit of an atmosphere from time to time, but it isn't good support lol

So you agree then you have the trophies we have the support, its all there in black and white

Cook wanted to spend loads of money on ageing players, whereas the new owner wanted to develop more younger talent. He also wanted to get back to the North West, and was struggling without a local scouting network.

The last players to move from either club to the other were from Blue to Red. These are facts.
