Ex-Saints in Europe 13:12 - Nov 8 with 324 viewsdirk_doone

Even though last season was outstanding, with several ex-Saints featuring in the Champions League Final, this could be the best ever season for ex-Saints playing in the Champions League & Europa League.

The 2019/20 ex-Saints European squad. It's particularly strong in the central defensive area. Lemina is a weak link but he could be replaced by Djenepo next year:

Forster
Gazzaniga
Chambers
Fonte
van Dijk
Alderweireld
Lovren
Shaw
Lemina
Davis
Elyounoussi
Tadic
Oxlade-Chamberlain
Mané
Bale

Bench:
Wanyama
Lallana

Manager: Pochettino
Coach: Rohl
DOF Mitchell

It's going to be difficult to improve on this next season as we don't have enough players of European quality left to sell or loan out any more. But, what our academy and recruitment department have achieved for other clubs in recent years is impressive. Everybody involved must feel very proud.

That’s one heck of a deep roster.

On the bright side, you have to bear in mind that they are benefitting from the higher standard of coaching and fitness training at other clubs so it doesn't mean they'd have been anywhere near as good if they'd stayed here.

And another thing, as you can see from this list, Saints & Norwich are the only clubs to have made a profit in the transfer market over the last 5 years. We should feel proud of our business model, although we're going to have to sell a couple more players if we want to stop Norwich nicking our net spend trophy:

Having 2 keepers in the starting XI is a bit silly and as Alderweireld was never officially our player, move both of them to the subs bench and put Bale and Oxlade-Chamberlain in their place. Gives a bit more balance to the side too.

I'll eagerly await to see 130's list of ex-Skates competing in the 2019/20 Champions and Europa League.

'Squad' doesn't equal 'starting XI'

But, you are right about Bale & Oxlade-Chamberlain. I'll add them to the squad now. There are probably 1 or 2 more I've overlooked.

Yes, with the right coaching, both he and Bertrand could recover their form at clubs playing in Europe next season. I wonder if Bertand's left it a bit too late though.

Will do, although I'm promoting Mitchell to Director of Football, to match his new status at Red Bull, and adding Danny Rohl as first team coach.

Really, what we have contributed to European football makes you proud. As you say, if Pompey had contributed even half as much, 130 would be banging on about it on here every day for years to come.
