Saints And The The Big Freeze Of 1963 27th Mar 2020 09:06
We are currently left twiddling our thumbs with no football to watch, but in 1963 it was a similar story but this time it was the weather to blame. 9

First ever match for me was the 4-2 trouncing of Pompey at the Dell. Brilliant game of football.
Went with my Dad who wasn't really a football fan and being ex RN I think he had some mixed feelings and divided loyalties.
As for me it was Saints then and ever since.
The atmosphere in that packed Dell was supercharged even though as a kid in the lower west stand the view was very restricted.
Saints' team was as follows:
Ron Reynolds GK,
Stuart Williams RB, Tommy Traynor LB,
Ken Wimshurst RH, Tony Knapp CH, Cliff Huxford LH,
Terry Paine RW, George O'Brien IR, George Kirby CF, David Burnside IL, John Sydenham LW.

Can't remember all the Pompey players but Armstrong was their goalie, at full back was Tony Barton who went on to manage and win the European Cup with Villa, Jimmy Dickinson at centre half and Ron Saunders at centre forward.
