David Luiz and Saints' defenders 09:45 - Jun 18 with 1258 views | DorsetIan | Watching David Luiz's horror show last made me wonder whether we set the bar too high for Saints' defenders? I can imagine the meltdown on here if Vertergaard, Hoedt or Stephens had done what he had done. Also makes me wonder wether the idea that we can shore up our defence with the purchase of an 'experienced' central defender. The frailties of defenders past their prime all too evident last night.

David Luiz and Saints' defenders on 10:29 - Jun 18 with 1221 views | dirk_doone | To be fair, I don't think we've ever had a defender who's won as many honours as David Luiz has. When he was the same age that Vestergaard, Hoedt and Stephens are, he was one of the best players in the world but he seems to have lost motivation and concentration towards the end of his career. Maybe it's time for him to retire. His post-match interview was one of the most honest I've ever seen. Fonte was 26 when we bought him in 2010 and our defence and successful team over the following 7 years were built around him. We probably need to find another proven central defender in his 20s, not 30s, possibly from the Championship so that he'd be within our price range. Personally, I like Dael Fry. I didn't see the interview. Yes, very few could compete with that. It just made me thing that if someone as experienced as him can be making mistakes like that then perhaps we need to cut our defenders a bit more slack. Defenders a bit like goalkeepers in that their mistakes tend to lead to goals more often, so there is more focus on them.

I know a lot of fans are very critical of Stephens but, personally, I think the central defensive partnership of Stephens and Bednarek is OK: not great but OK. Of course, if we could add a more reliable central defender to the squad, that would be ideal. However, as we found with Hoedt and Vestergaard, you can spend a lot of money and end up with someone who's not even as good as the players you already have. [Post edited 18 Jun 2020 10:46]

I think you should target central defenders from teams that concede very few goals and not from teams that concede a lot (which is the mistake we've been making lately). Vestergaard came from a Borussia Monchengladbach team with a poor defensive record. I'd start by looking at the teams with the best defensive records in the Championship, Portuguese and French leagues, who might just have central defenders within our price range. It might be obvious to someone as bright as you Saint68, but it doesn't seem to stop ever defensive error being leapt on as the crime of the century.

I agree. Stephens and Bednarek seem to me to work well together. And I may be remembering wrongly, but I think we had a pretty good defensive record when we were playing with a settled Bertrand-Bednarek-Stephens-Cedric back 4 for a while this season.

Was that analogy just in case anyone was unsure what ‚obvious‘ meant? If so, I think you really nailed it.

David Luiz and Saints' defenders on 07:42 - Jun 19 with 828 views | saintwizzler | Overplaying is the most annoying mistake. Hoedt Several Bertrand v Everton away 1-1 Fonté at Bournemouth 2-0 And Valery in the last game. Play safe and clear your lines, put it in row z. No, it doesn’t look great in this showmanship PL but it gains points. Keown, Adams, Bould etc never fûcked about. Some of the blame lays at the goalkeeper’s door. They have a perfect view and should be screaming at the defender to get rid. Then we have the number of free headers for the opposition in our area, ball watching.
