Southampton and Sport 13:28 - Aug 5 with 2481 views130yrs_and_one_Cup

Just checking out your illustrious city's history on the subject of Sport.

So far I have found the following:

6 Southern league titles
27 continuous years in the top flight
1 FA cup
The oldest Bowling ground in the World (impressive this one)

Donna Hartley : won bronze in the 400m relay in Moscow
Mike Brown : Won a runners up medal at the last Rugby World Cup
Wally Masur : Reached the SF of two Grand Slams (really an Australian though)

Not a bad start for a town that isn't known for it's sport

Poll: Is Southampton FC a big club. Where do they rank?

George Ede has to be the most sporting chap from your town, a Grand National Winning Jockey, and a Hampshire cricketer with an amazing batting average of 9 1/2. The man had talent, probably the most talented sportsman ever to come from a SO postcode. He was schooled at Abingdon though, which explains his pedigree.

Tragically, he lost his life at Aintree two years after his victory, so it's a bitter-sweet story

Steady Trips, this guy has issues. We know he’s “special” so we shouldn’t mock the afflicted too much.

On second thoughts, you’re right.

Fvck off you, boring, pedantic, monotonous, pompey cvnt. 🖕

I just don't get it, seriously its just mental. Being a Saints fan i have no desire to visit a Pompey forum at all let alone be on there every hour of the day. Normally i don't mind if there is some modicum of decent debate but the guy just talks dribble. He was on here banging on about his beloved club one Saturday when his team were at home and i pulled him up on it......he didn't even have a half valid excuse for not being at Fratton. I just wish he would get back on his mums tit and stop talking rubbish for once.

Still, not very often i bite so in his world he is one up.on a Scummer which doesn't happen that often i suppose.......

Tony Godfrey from Bitterne, was a top motorcycle racer in the 50's and 60's winning the 1959 500cc British Championship by one point from Mike Hailwood, considered to be the greatest of them all.
He accumulated many wins at circuits all over the UK, and also raced in motorcycle GPs winning the 350 USA GP at Daytona and with podiums in Europe and made more than twenty starts in the Isle of Man TT.
