Will we be disorientated today? 11:55 - Feb 6 with 1598 viewsgerry_us

Obviously depends on if the rain ever stops I suppose, and if the named team members actually know each other!
Time will tell.

Gerry asks if we will be disorientated today. I prefer to say that we will be full of Eastern promise.

SB and HM make the short journey to Brisbane Road this afternoon to do battle with Ross Embleton’s Orient.

I mention HM because he never gets a mention, and I am beginning to wonder why he was brought to the club in the first place.

After the disappointment of a wasted journey to Salford on Tuesday (it is difficult to fathom why we travelled when a local referee should have been able to identify that the match was unlikely to go ahead) after the rain and snow and sleet that the North experienced on Tuesday.

The bizarre sight of marking white lines after the postponement had been announced was even stranger. Gary Neville has reimbursed Cambridge when their game was similarly called off but there has been no word about such gestures for the U’s. Still, we hope that justice is done.

Now I am pleased that the game was off because in March the weather should be better and thus more of a chance that it will go ahead. Last season we played in horrendous conditions and deservedly won 2-1.

So today Orient are the hosts and I think that we will win at the tenth time of asking by 3-1 with Big Frank on the scoresheet plus Brendan Wiredu and Jevani Brown who has not scored a goal since mid-November.

SB must be bold and play all three new signings today from the outset. It will give the team a lift.

Gerken

Welch-Hayes Eastman Smith Doherty

Chilvers Wiredu Poku

Harriott Brown Nouble

Subs:
George Sowunmi Clampin Lapslie Marshall-Miranda Folivi Tovide

Ben Stevenson and Harry Pell are still missing and so try Chilvers, Wiredu and Poku in midfield.

The table shows little sign of improvement:

Cambridge 26 45
COL U 25 31
Bolton 25 31
Harrogate 25 30
Stevenage 25 25
Barrow 24 23
Grimsby 26 21
Southend 26 20

The three new players have had valuable days to gel with the side, SB needs to be positive.

We never got to know the side that he selected at Salford because team sheets were not exchanged so we do not know whether Senior was going to be returned to the team. Now football is a relatively straightforward game. You play to your strengths and play your best players or those who are in form. Using this premise Senior must remain on the sidelines. Yes, I have a down on him at present, but he adds nothing to the team and SB must realise that players have to earn the shirt.

Light rain and 8 degrees Celsius is the forecast for Brisbane Road this afternoon. So, a heavy pitch but relatively mild.

We need to start well and be positive. Get the ball forward quickly. For the first time this season Jevani Brown will have real support in the shape of Big Frank and Ainsley Harriott will be able to bring his Michelin star performance to a lively looking front three by cooking up something special.

SB does have a problem in midfield. It would be difficult to leave Tom Lapslie out but Wiredu and Chilvers offer youth and pace in midfield with Poku who still need to recreate his best form this season but he does have potential.

Josh Bohui appears to be out of favour, and no one knows where Paris Cowan-Hall is so Michael Folivi must be capable of getting some valuable minutes.

I am afraid that Aramide Oteh is not the answer to our striking problems and should be returned to QPR. I would rather see Samson Tovide offered an opportunity in the not-too-distant future.

So, enjoy the game and lets make it tenth time lucky to record that vital victory.

Statement of intent from Ball with all three new signings starting - time for them to put their marker down for a starting position going forward.

Surprised both 'keepers are allowed to wear kits very similar to the O's, particularly George's which is almost identical?

Wiredu already making his presence felt.

Big Frank should have scored.

But a vast improvement on recent dross.

And we look like a bottom half of the league team. We've not scored a goal of our own for two months!

I think the result must be viewed in the context of Orient’s fine home record. It is a good away point in our fight to stay clear of the relegation battle. However, our inability to score is disturbing. We got no more than we deserved and had technology ruled in our favour the home team would have been robbed. But that is a reflection of our season. How often have we been truly awful, but stole three points? Yesterday, we were ok (ish), but far from truly competitive in what is an ever stronger division.

Well, we could have played badly and lost, say 8-0 .

10 games without a win, and 697 minutes since a Colchester player scored a goal. That is why you don't give the head coach job to an inexperienced internal Cowling.

Whilst I see supporting U's as a lifelong commitment I don't feel that we have actually been a good team to watch since Benny Fenton....oh sorry Phil Parkinson left. Since then we have had "managers" who have had either no affinity with the club or no idea at all.
Whilst we may not still be here without Robbie Cowling I think even he must be seriously concerned about the recent abject performances. Maybe he should bite the bullet and give Benny Fenton.. ..oh sorry, Phil Parkinson a call. We have a decent squad but without the leadership to make it work.
Benny Fenton? Look him up youngsters, we really played proper football under him. What memories.

I think we played really good football under Williams in our first season in the Championship and we've had flashes of good stuff under every manager since, apart from maybe Keen, but the consistency has been sadly lacking.

In the short highlights I watched most of Orient's attacks came down our left side, did our new left back not have the best of debuts or were the highlights a little misleading?

Brilliant Gerry. As you say, what memories!

I hope you don't mind, but some from my grey head, too:
John Evans, inside forward.
Neil Langman, centre forward.
Duncan Forbes, centre half.
Tommy Millar, full back.
Cyril Hammond, wing half.
Edgar Rumney, full back.
Bobby Hunt, inside forward.
Brian Abrey, centre half.
John Laidlaw, full back.
Mike Foster, right wing.
Mike Grice, winger.
Mick Loughton, centre half.

No doubt others will come to mind in the fullness of time.

When Duncan Forbes came down from Musselburgh we wondered about the recruitment as at the time several others came from so called, Scottish Junior football as did Johnny Fowler earlier.
We obviously had at the time a good connection because they all seemed to perform and I would bet several youngsters could make the grade even now from Scottish Junior football.
As regards Duncan Forbes it was staggering games he played for us and virtually the same number for Norwich.
