Gabbiadini's purple patch for us in 2017 got me thinking about other strikers who had one in their career but never scored much before or after that. One that stands out for me is the Tony Funnell scoring spree which got us promoted in 1978.
Adam Lallana in that one season under Poch where he could actually score goals.
Did that include the match where he went on that ridiculous dribbling run round several players and scored? I don't think I even cheered as I was too stunned at what I'd seen from the Itchen Northam corner.

Lallana scored 5 in 10 in 2013/14 which is the only purple patch he had in his career.
I'm sure Dirk still views him as world class though!
Interestingly Lallana has failed to score a goal in his last 73 appearances!

Not Saints related but I remember italia 90 and the host nations toto schillaci being written about as having a purple patch at that World Cup. Not sure if it was true but whenever I read purple patch I always think of him.
James Beattie had a purple patch for a season !! 2002-3 Top English Scorer that season Got an England call up Same old Beattie, always scoring !!
Rickie Lambert had a purple patch for virtually his entire time at Saints 30 goals in his first season in L1 21 goals in our L1 promotion season 27 goals in our Championship season 15 and 13 goals in his 2 seasons with us in the Prem Best £1m transfer we ever made and he really did take us to the Premier League !! Oh and he got an England call up and scoring that goal v Scotland was nothing short of fantastic !!

I was at Wembley to see that Lambert goal v Scotland, and it is only the second time I have been at an England international at Wembley in recent years where I have heard the crowd going out through the exits still singing one player's name. All Saints fans there were bursting with pride that night.
But, I wouldn't describe Lambert as having just a purple patch. He was a prolific goalscorer throughout his career, right up until he went to Liverpool. Although, like Ted MacDougall, he was a player who scored his goals at progressively higher levels as, over the years, he moved up through the divisions to the top flight and internationals.
Tony Funnell had a genuine purple patch. He was only in the first team for 2 months, started just 8 games for Saints + 6 sub appearances, yet he scored 9 goals!
Marek Saganowski has got to be top of the list. 10 goals in 13 games. Then a new shiny contract later and only 9 more in 55 games. Surely the definition of a purple patch.
Mickey Evans kept us up in one of those late 90’s seasons. Think he won player of the month and then rarely seen in a Saints shirt after that.
Scored a brace at Forest and also remember the bloke nearly concussing himself when scoring at the Dell from recollection. Cannot remember against who now mind.....

It was spectacularly good and expectations rocketed, only to be very quickly dashed: a bit like Cuco Martina's one goal mini purple patch, which raises another question: Who was the greatest Saints' one goal wonder of all time? I remember when Benali eventually scored his only goal -a header - Who'd have expected that? And one which counted for something too as it was in a 2-1 win v Leicester - it shocked all Saints fans and made headlines. Great Saints' stalwart and hard man that he was, nobody had ever dreamed he was skilful enough to ever score a goal:

Clark had a fantastic start for us. He scored 16 in his first 20 games (including a hat trick on debut). Then someone introduced him to La Lupas and it was all downhill from there. Immortalised in the 'Colin of the Saints' cartoon strip in some dodgy fanzine or other.
