England will do what they always do - reach the latter stages of the competition before being meekly knocked out by the Germans/French/Spanish/Italian/Portuguese side. Talksport, Radio 5Live and SKY Sports will then be inundated by plebs demanding to know why JWP wasn't in the squad as his set pieces could have made all the differences. Most of those plebs will, of course, be ex-pro footballers... none of whom said anything at the time of JWP's omission.

I read yesterday that he was likely to be excluded because others had finished higher with their teams, which is no reason at all. It seems odd that Southgate talks about the need for players to have been fit and opaying regularly yet look set to take a couple who have been out for a while and are only just playing again. |  | | |

Looking at the squad with 4 right backs / wing backs it appears Southgate going for 343 formation, which makes JWP’s omission understandable, as they would probably need only one defensive midfield (DM) player.
If however he’s planning to play with 2 (DM)’s he seems to be taking a big risk on Henderson being ok, having not played since February, with only Phillips as cover.
However from Saints point of view, at least it gives JWP some rest having played non stop since last June. |  | | |
