Club Nicknames 09:08 - Jun 22 with 1352 views | SaintNick | Saw a bit on facebook about club nicknames back before the second world war, interesting to see how many clubs had different nicknames back then. Brighton - The Shrimps Notts County - The Lambs# Reading - Biscuitmen Middlesbrough - Ironsiders Palace - Glaziers West Brom - The Baggies Quite a few more who have changed, I do remember in the 1970's some still had the original nicknames above

Club Nicknames on 09:22 - Jun 22 with 1332 views | Sadoldgit | I remember Palace changing their name from the Glaziers (taken from the old Crystal Palace) to the Eagles back in the 70’s. They were trying to become cool and also nicked the Barcelona strip. That was my local club and most of my mates were Palace fans. I always thought they had an inferiority complex because they weren’t as cool as the north London clubs. Even manager Malcolm Allison in his fedora failed to shift them into the cool bracket.

Because they've always been shite, the edgiest clubs are and have always been Chelsea, West Ham and Millwall due to their "element".

What is this “element” you talk about? You don’t think that Tottenham have an “edge”? That is the one ground I have been to in London where “edge” is guaranteed.

Club Nicknames on 19:51 - Jun 22 with 1084 views | dirk_doone | Pompey's original nicknames were The Shrimps and The Pompadours because of their traditional Pompadour Pink shirts. When that club was wound up, the new club established in 1911 adopted blue shirts so they lost the nickname Shrimps but Pompadours, which had been abbreviated to Pompey, stuck. Most of those other nicknames, Baggies, Biscuitmen, Glaziers, were still in use in the 70s. [Post edited 22 Jun 2021 19:56]

I recall Palace had a goalie called Bill Glazier . We're they named after him or his grandad who built the original edifice, according to legend?

I remember seeing Glazier play for Coventry against us. He was a very good goalkeeper, who was always close to breaking into the England team but never quite did. The Crystal Palace, built for the Great Exhibition, was, as its name suggests, made of glass (by glaziers). [Post edited 22 Jun 2021 22:29]

Relative of ours who was in her 90s always called them that. She was from Sunderland and they brought the Cup to her school in 1937 when they beat Preston. Their captain was Horatio Carter. At polite occasions when telling the story she would invariably trot out: 'Filthy Millwall London scum, kicked our Carter up the bum'. See - nothing changes.
