Anyone else think the second half was like watching saints last season? Take a lead and then attempt to park the bus, but run out of steam or ideas. Like saints, we were lacking a leader to tell everyone to push up the pitch. Best team won and no complaints from me. It was a superb tournament for England, and only a year to wait for the World Cup,

The problem is we played most of the match with 8 defensive players and Mount, the only attacking midfielder out there, was so anonymous that I never even noticed he was playing in the second half until he touched the ball in our own penalty area. That left Kane and Sterling totally starved of service up front. The only ray of hope was that Rice, a defensive midfielder, went on a few surging runs forward, which surprised everybody as he'd never done that before.

When Southgate needed to bring an attacking midfielder on to help Rice, he brought on Henderson for Rice so our only attacking threat in the middle of the pitch was lost and we were penned back in our own half.

The result: England had their lowest possession in a game at Wembley since 2016 and Kane failed to muster a shot or create a goal-scoring chance for only the second time since 2015 in 61 appearances for England. I don't have the stats for this but I also think it's very likely that in the second half we had less possession of the ball in the oppponent's half of the pitch than any England team has in any game this century.

We did dominate the 1st 30mins and should have made more of it. But this was not a case of Southgate saying sit deep, keep tight. This was a case of Italy sorted their heads out and got into gear. 34 games unbeaten, haven't gone behind since September 2020 playing 16 games. This isn't a disgrace, losing on penalties.
First half they started taking over from around 30mins, it coincided with Jorginho, Barrella and Verati getting on the ball more. Our press stopped being effective. 2nd half we were deep, but Italy knew how to force us deep, press us high. This is an Italy side who know how to dominate sides, know how to break them down, know how to hurt them in multiple ways. We didn't respond to the subs, but it took a set piece and a little bit of luck to score. Their goal came from Stones and Chielini wrestling and missing the ball. It opened the box up.
The only thing Southgate didn't do was react well enough to our own performance. Mount was poor again, Saka for Trippier was odd imo the 3 was working at keeping them at arms length.
No shame should go on the shoulders of poor Saka, he is a bright talent who will be in an around the England squad for many years. In fact most of these players will be.
Southgate got almost everything spot on this tournament. He knew the approach needed wasn't one of expansive football but tight clinical football and we got to a final. He did learn from previous experience to Croatia. Sorry but he did. He knew that at times we needed to be tighter and not allow sides back into games which apart from tonight happened. We have not been outplayed until the final. That could not be said.
Stuff this about luck of the draw. We have just got to the final of a major tournament.
On our way we have faced the following ranked sides 10th (SF), 12th(L16), 14th(Gp), 24th(QF), 40th(Gp) & 44th(Gp). If luck of the draw means facing and beating Germany in the L16 which for most people here was the par result & 10th ranked Denmark who have beaten twice recently with ease then so be it. England can only deal with what was in front of them. The reason our side fell nicely is because the bigger sides were arrogant and thought they would breeze through much like England and sides containing Beckham, Lampard, Rooney, Gerrard, Nevilles etc This side knows its humility and has done something that has not been done in 55 years.
We are going to be a force to reckoned with, we have talent coming out of everywhere apart from at the back. We have just reached a final conceding 0 goals from open play. Read that again 0, 2 goals all tournament. Not beaten a decent team my hairy arse we have not.
Call me a dick or whatever you like, but I would take the final of a major tournament and losing over going out like 2016, or 2012, or 2010, or 2006, or 2000. Meekly and too early for par.
To contrast the 2 sides. This was our 1st final in 55 years, this was Italy's 10th. Donnarumma has been in 5 penalty shootouts winning all 5. We have won 1 penalty shoot out since 1996. They had 2 centurion centre backs, we had Kelvin Phillips who in 2020 had only just won promotion to the PL.
This side has so much room to grow, there is a reason why the scenes of this summer and 2018 have seemed bigger and more united than previous tournaments. Southgate has brought this team together with the country and they have a level of humility. Southgate has taken responsibility for the penalty takers. Not sure Hodgson, Capello, McClaren, Erickson, Keegan would have. If he is to move on then IMO what he has done needs to be applauded not taken apart and told that he cost us the game. This side you can see what they have been trying to achieve on the pitch, they have done it with a level of control not like England teams of old where the ball is treated like a grenade.

You make a lot of very valid points and yes, we don’t treat the ball as grenade but nor do we create many scoring opportunities and that is what causes frustration. I’ll say it again. 1 shot at goal in 120 minutes! This is something that Southgate has to address if we are ever going to win one of these tournaments again. It is a balancing act. He has got the defensive stuff right but in the process has taken away our ability to create enough chances to go the full distance. Anyone can miss a penalty so I don’t blame him for that. I do blame him for not using our offensive abilities to carve out more than 1 shot on goal. I doubt if there wasn’t one person in the country who wasn’t crying out for a change at 60 minutes. That is not to belittle the excellent work he has done in getting the team to the final, but he did make tactical errors yesterday that lessened our chances of winning before the penalty shoot out.
