The loss of Danny Rohl has been a big blow to Ralph.
I don't think he has recovered from the loss.
Does he need an quality and experienced assistant???

I think he does need an experienced assistant alongside him, having said that it hasn't been a big blow, since Rohl has left we have finished 11th, topped the Premier League, reached an FA Cup semi final and had a comfortable mid table position so it hasn't been a terrible blow to us

I am not saying he is a bad manager but with some help he could do so much better, those achievements you list are interesting, how long were we top of the Premiership? A Cup semi final which was desperately disappointing we hardly had a shot ,two 9nil defeats and some relegation scraps.
What was they used to say on school reports 'Could do better'

We thought that we had the answers, It was the questions we had wrong.

In the last 40 years prior to last season we were top of the Premier League/ old 1st Division just once back in 1988, so despite it being only a brief sojourn, it was still better than the 17 managers who had led us in the top flight since that day in 1988 had managed.

We havent actually had any relegation scraps under Hasenhuttl, in his first half season he let us to 16th in the League 5 points clear of relegation.

In his first full season one in which we suffered that first 9-0 defeat we still ended up 11th comfortably in mid table.

Last season saw us safe by January although the eventual 15th was disappointing.

The Cup semi final was dictated by the way Leicester played, they only had one shot themselves and one in the final.

Again how many Saints managers since the war have got us to an FA Cup semi final,? The answer including Ralph is 6 out of 30 that have managed us in the last 75 years.

So when you say could do better Ralph still has a record that is better than most managers that we have had

We need to get a reality check on where the club stands at the moment and how it is performing, given the resources we have 14th-15th is just about par score for where we should finish in any given season.

Be careful what we wish for Claude Puel was despised despite the fact that he had just had probably the 6th or 7th best season in the clubs history when you take into account a Cup final and 8th in the league, but that wan't good enough.

Ironically most who demand Gao out for a lack of investment, demand Hasenhuttl also go for not getting us into the top 10 despite having no investment from the owner.

Who would do any better in the situation we are in ?

He needs jettisoning..he's been afforded far too much grace after his appalling fall since Rohl departed...

Organ grinder fled and the monkey is just surviving on charm and the occasional freak result..

That’s a balanced way of looking at it I’ll concede that. For me I struggle to think of who we could attract given our circumstances but also still feel like I would not be sorry to see him move on.

Like all of the “freak results” we had last season up until we were ravaged by injuries at Christmas?
Not sure why Rohl is given so much credit. He only worked here for 8 months and we had a better spell after he left.

I think those stats provide a good perspective. The Puel and Hughes season's were terrible from a football entertainment point of view. Whilst we have endured some embarrassing moments since then, there have also been many happy ones, and some attractive football to go along with it.

'Ralph still has a record that is better than most managers that we have had'

Chris Nichol took us to 7th in the first division.
Alan Ball 10th.
Gordon Strachan 8th.
Pochettino 8th.
Koeman 7th
Puel 8th

For fear of repeating myself, I don't think Ralph is a bad manager only that he would be better with some help from an quality/experienced assistant .

Who had heard of Pochettino before he arrived?

Ralph asked for a small squad last season (god knows why) and Semmens said in a recent podcast that was a mistake in hindsight.
He also said Ralph feels he has 2 players in each position so hopefully an injury crisis can be avoided.

I wonder if he was just trying to put a brave face on a difficult situation. We had a very thin squad little coming through the academy ranks and we couldn’t shift out players on high wages. Perhaps he thought it would be easier to implement his ideas with a small squad but as we now know, his style of play wore the players out in the second half of matches and the squad didn’t have enough strength in depth to deal with the injuries. We have a stronger squad now but the problems lie with Adam Armstrong not replicating Ings’ goal scoring level and losing Stephens and having the not very oven ready replacement in Lycano still not oven ready.

The manager could do with some help.
Trying to build a squad with no budget is a difficult enough task compounded with managing and getting the best out of mediocre, underperforming players.
He's doing ok given the circumstances. There have been some depressingly poor results and performances as well as highlights.
Saints fans have high hopes and some have unrealistically high expectations.

He does have help. According to Semmens he is very happy with his back room staff. Whether they are any good or not is another matter.
