Russian Threats 09:49 - Apr 26 with 2120 viewsSaintNick

Interesting to see that Russia is warning about the war escalating, should we be worried, or is the truth that if Russia can't conquet Ukraine, what hope has it against the combined strength of NATO

I guess the worry is that, if they can’t be a force with congenital weapons, they will turn to their nuclear arsenal. They certainly come across as being crazy enough to escalate, whether they would in reality, who knows? The problem is, they know that there is no appetite for escalation in the West so they are using that to push boundaries. At some point either NATO or various western alliances are going to have to push back and call Putin’s bluff. Like all bullies, he only understands one thing, bullying. He, hopefully, will back off when confronted by a bigger bully. History has taught us the folly of pussyfooting around megalomaniacs like him. To stop him the situation will get a lot messier. Do we have the stomach for it?

It has to be hoped that it's a bluff because the alleged excuse for the "special military operation" is to keep NATO from the borders of Russia.

If Finland/Sweden join NATO, that brings the threat closer to Russia and they will certainly be making provocative statements.

The truth however seems to be that the Russian military machine is not as fearsome as we thought and that a small (if well equipped and supported) army is enough to blunt their progress and even reverse it.

However would US/UK/French jets shoot MIGs out of the sky to defend Finland/Sweden?

I see the rhetoric going up in inverse ratio to (lack of) military progress on the ground.

Would we see nuclear weapons - strategic or tactical?

I think this may depend on how far down the Russian chain of command loyalty to Putin goes. Some are no doubt loyal. Some will be conveniently loyal until it suits them not to be. Some will be disloyal and almost certainly western sleepers. At some point they will need to buy into the use of nuclear and at that time, I can see some sort of attempt on Putin. I only hope it is successful.

I just don't get Russia or Putin. He's sitting pretty with a massive old and gas resource that he is selling to the West for bilions. He's got complete totalitarian control of his country which he runs like a mafia boss, and is pocketing as much of the money for himself and his cronies as he likes. And he goes and f*cks it all up.

'The West' gives him Winter Olympics and a World Cup and let's Russian's citizens use the capital cities of Europe as the their playgrounds. And yet he still thinks we're after him, the paranoid loon.

This war with Ukraine has proved what an ineffectual army he has and although he will try to claim some sort of victory, he and Russia are f*cked for the foreseeable future.

The nuclear threats are just that. He's got nothing else. And if he tried to 'push the button' the Russian military would stop him. God knows why one of his generals haven't already pulled the plug on his suicide mission in Ukraine. Enough of them personally are already dead.

So, for once, I'm with Bicester on this one. There's nothing we can do if the pig-eyed fascist wants to start a nuclear war and absolutely no point trying to pander to him.

Trouble is there is no way back for him now, he is desperate, it is just going to be a matter of whether someone in his government decides to bring him down before they all get implicated or else eventually we are just going to have to sort him out ourselves

The west gave Putin the Olympics, the world cup and loads of money for oil and gas. But he's a Hitler mad man. We tried the diplomatic, tickle his tummy approach. It hasn't worked. He wants to be top boss, in charge, rule the world. A nutter like Putin doesn't care that the west gave him the Olympics. People like that take advantage. We need to fight fire with fire. This is why we have to be prepared for such nutters from time to time. He knows that if he attempts to nuke anywhere, the west could nuke back. That deterrent would surely stop him from doing it. Otherwise, the world, including his Russia, would be obliterated. Nobody would be around the see Putin save face. No logic to these threats. This is why having nuclear deterrents are so necessary. If nobody had these, Putin would indeed take over the world, as he would have the ultimate weapons that no-one else had. Luckily, he knows the west could you obliterate his country back. He is just acting like a bully and hoping we cower away in fear.
