Check out his early managerial career - it wasn't exactly stella.
And I don't think that international experience necessarily equips you for the challenges of the league, and especially in terms of the day to day man management of a squad.
I'm not sure I would even be that excited if Southgate took the job.
The brief is to find someone who has been successful in English league football. Not an easy brief to fill but it's pretty clear to me who it automatically rules out.

Carsley would follow the same pattern as Russel Martin. He believes in the same tippy-tappy, possession based tactics. These tactics work when you have good quality technical players for that level (Saints at championship level, England U21) but not when you don't.

I'm not sure what you're saying is impossible. If you mean staying in the PL with cheap players (by PL standards) I'd say it is difficult but not impossible - just look at the smaller clubs that survive. We need a style that you can do it in the same way as e.g. B'mouth (intense work rate), Palace (counter attacking) or Brentford (set pieces).
What's certain is that we can't do it trying to play Carsley style possession based football as you need Man City type players to do that. | | | |

Just from watching the U21s under him, or when he was England boss, you can see the emphasis on possession and short passing, playing out from the back etc. But don't take my word for it....

The quote you put up just means he likes to give the players some freedom and responsibility for their shape. Again, that can work well with high quality players but might not work so well with our bunch of mediocre youngsters who are inexperienced for the level (3rd youngest in the league). | | | |
