5 Things About Millwall 09:40 - Dec 1 with 1722 viewsSaintNick

1. I bought my dearest pint ever in a pub by London Bridge, £8.40 for a pint of Camden Hells, I had a pint of Budvar next that was £8.50, criminal price, the Market Porter in Borough Market was charging £7.20 for Camden Hells, so pure profiteering .

2. On a brighter note as I was talking to someone as the second half kicked off, one of the staff in the refreshment kiosk came over and said would you all like a free pint, as they had some already poured left over, so that was pleasing, it did mean though I watched our first goal on the TV screen

3. Although there were a lot of police, it seems that they are far happier these days to let fans mingle on the tube between the ground and London Bridge, there wasn't any trouble, but in the past this would have been unthinkable

4. One day Ill do that Bermondsey Beer mile thing, rather than London Bridge, at least you will get a decent overpriced pint, rather than the Manchester or Burton brewed beers Heineken, Birra Moretti & Cruzcampo etc in most pubs these days.

5. One defeat doesn't mean a lot in the grand scale of things

Satisfying The Bloodlust Of The Masses In Peacetime

I note you place your disappointment at the relatively high price of a London Bridge pint in a decent glass in ranking above your pleasant surprise at a free pint of Millwall ground piss, presumably in a plastic glass.

And yet I am accused by some of being the negative one on here.....

1) I also got a free pint. Wouldn't happen at St Mary's under Sport Republic 😜.

2) I went up with Nicks Away Travel. Great scenic tour of London, driving past the Thames, the millennium wheel and Houses of Parliament. Well done to the driver getting through hordes of people and cars beeping in central London. I wouldn't want to drive through that.

3) I thought the atmosphere was brilliant, great from us but unfortunately for us the stadium was crackling with roars, when they scored their goals. It's a proper old school ground, without the tourists and cameras. Fans jumping on the advertising boards, the whole ground singing in an intimidating fashion. Loved it. Championship grounds like this beat soulless huge PL stadiums hands down.

4) To the fans who jumped all over me, when Armstrong scored, don't worry nothing broken, just a few slightly cracked ribs.

5) Shame about the result. I think Millwall deserved the win, and I think they will be there or thereabouts come the end of the season. I wouldn't want to play them in the play offs, with the second leg at the Den, that's for sure. On reflection, we were only a few seconds from a resilent well earned point but they were the stronger side.

Do they still sing along to ''...we all go down to The De-en' when they score?

I thought the atmosphere in our end was poor.

Really poor.

Literally just singing when we were winning. And that was it.

Quiet as lambs for most of the game.

Too many people think simply turning up constitutes support.

I was more pissed off by our fans than the result.

We need to be a whole lot better.

It probably depends where you are sat, as the two tiers found it difficult to sing the same songs at the same time. A few Millwall fans were saying we played our part and they could hear us with 3000 in one end, and not many teams bring that many to the ground. Without being sat at the other end, it's difficult I think to judge how loud or quiet we were although we arn't as intimidating and as ferocious as the Millwall support, for sure. Sing when we're winning but that's true for most teams. Millwall didnt get going until they scored. I will agree that we rarely see St Mary's crackling with all stands singing like .Millwall did Saturday.

The quality of our support is a subject which has been done to death, so I should stop harping on about it, and just accept that it is never going to improve as 95% of our fans just aren't that passionate about Saints and it's a day out to them.

'95% of our fans just aren't that passionate about Saints'

I don't believe that.

When we were relegated to Div 1 our support was excellent.
The Football League Trophy most of the 73 Thousand were Saints fans.
Going back to 76 the semi final against Crystal Palace Saints fans had the whole of the shed end at Stamford Bridge and I am telling you now they were very passionate that day..

I thought our support was ok, quiet at times and loud other times. Having said that it was probably one of the quietest away ends we’ve had a Millwall.

At QPR there was some bloke trying to get the signing going and when some didn’t join in he shouted out “ fvcking sing up you w^nkers” and other stuff - hardly going to encourage other fans to sing up. In fact I think some fans near him told him to shut up.

It’s the 1st time that we weren’t held back for about 30-45 mins I can’t remember a time when we just walked up away fans ally and were only held up about 10 mins.

As Nick pointed out it’s a very very different Millwall now days.

It won’t be long before pubs will try getting away with 10 quid a pint in some places.

In Div 1, we were winning most of the time.

JPT Final, most of our fans were there for a day out.

We won the 1976 Semi-Final 2-0; would the support have been the same if we had gone 1-0 down?

A free pint of the finest 'Spitfire' lager...........

Still, unlike Vicarage Road i suppose it just about qualifies as alcohol

Ready and waiting to mop up those European places......

I did the Bermondsey beer mile, ended up walking from London Bridge all the way to the ground. Stopped at a few different places along the way. Well worth making the effort should we play them again next season (they are more likely to be heading up than us on Saturdays efforts).
I thought they were worthy winners on the day.

Decided to head straight back to London Bridge afterwards and was in the pub there by 17:30, very different experience to my visits to the old Den in the 80’s.

Jam tomorrow

When their fans get going the noise is incredible , but there were long periods when they ( and us) were very quiet.
Just like all other sets of fans.

A goal from either team prompted “ banter” at the opposition fans, at them, or them at us so all in all, our support was decent, there’s incredibly loud when they had something to sing about.

An expensive day and early start for a quick day out for somebody who is not passionate about Saints ?

The support was ok. I have seen/heard better, but most (certainly more that 150 people as suggested) got behind the team. I accept the Millwall support was good, but there were long spells where they went quiet and they were on top most of the game.

Splitting Saints fans between upper and lower tiers (not sure how many were in the upper) probably didn't help.

Shipwright pub by London Bridge was a dump. The other one up the road was ok though.

As far as the defeat goes, no it doesn’t matter that much. However the performance worried me. Back to the slow tippy-tappy that goes nowhere. If that is what Eckert is about then I would rather we recruited someone else.
