5 Things About The Middlesbrough Home Game 14:12 - May 13 with 3123 viewsSaintNick

1. Everyone seemed to think we would win it easily and there seemed to be an air of expectation that translated to lets sit back and be entertained.

2. As in above the atmosphere never really got going till late in the game.

3. The players were shattered from a gruelling 6 weeks or so of weekend game followed by midweek game, they can really do with the rest now

4. The Northam Fanzone doesn't do their drinks deals after the game not even season ticket holder discount, at £7.30 a pint it was £2 dearer than Boro were charging on Saturday

5. There is really very little red in this seasons kit, so come on you reds was not that accurate for those that sung it

In certain areas, but from where I sat in the Kingsland it was silent most of the game

Re point 4, maybe this was a key factor in us beating Middlesbrough.

Our fans have been putting more money in the till at the fanzones 💰

Poll: If we were today re-instated to the play-off final, would you go on Saturday?

You are quite correct, we were originally trying to sign the Bayern Munich 4th choice keeper in January, but the extra revenue in the fanzones enabled us to upgrade to the 3rd choice

If you had drunk more, we might have got their 2nd choice.

Regarding 5. You really are becoming bitter in your old age.
Think back to when you went to games in the 70s , 80s . If everyone is shouting “come on you reds “, like they’ve always done. Why pick this up now.
What should we sing “come on you red and whites”…

1. Nobody expected an easy win. There was a sense unease and nervousness, but that was to be expected with what was at stake and the proposed spygate charges.

2. Conceding early didn't help the atmosphere initially, but the crowd really got behind the team and it helped lift them. There was much more singing and from all areas of the ground.

3. The Boro players were not as fit as ours - despite us having to play so many games of late. They dropped their intensity levels in the 2nd half at the Riverside and the same happened at SMS, particularly in the 2nd half and in extra time, where we dominated possession and chances.

4. Welcoming the player coach certainly got lots of fans to the stadium early. Never seen the concourses so busy before a game and people seemed happy enough to pay the £7+ for Asahi or £6+ for a Thatchers

5. Strange thing to mention Nick, given the importance of the game. Is this an observation from the gam, or a pop at fan song selections ? Why wait til the end of the season to make this point ?

I was rather hoping for....

I certainly don't agree with everything that Nick posts, but for point 5 it is and always has been a big point of issue for me. We are not reds, we are red and white! MUFC/Liverpool etc are Reds
For the mentioned song, for well over 50 years, I have always sung come on you Saints!
Back in the day we also used to sing Come on you Red and White... Machines

Sorry everyone, but couldn't bite my tongue on this.

I think like Nick you’ve missed the point.
When playing a team whose kit is the complete opposite, Blue,Black or Green, whatever.
You will always take the standout colour of our kit, hence “ Come on you Reds “.
On another note, we did play in Red about 14 years ago I think.

Come on you red and white machines is more of a shout though.

Come on you reds is so embedded it won’t go away, and shouldn’t. It’s one of the first things I was taught upon my first game. Every corner needs to be met with COYR.

I watched this again last night, I disagree with you with there being little atmosphere, as I thought it was great on the night and watching it again on tv it certainly came across very well and how it was on the night, even the biasis anti Saints commentators mentioned numerous times that the home fans were turning up the volume, not sure where you were Nick?

Block 20 of the Chapel was lively on Tuesday.

All stood up for the whole game, and decent noise, I thought.

Though possibly not able to be heard from the other end of the ground in amongst all the other noise.

You could hear the Chapel at times from the other end, and could see all the flags being waved and it looked lively. It was a full crowd, every seat taken and very loud at times. Due to Boro scoring so early and making it such a tough / tense game, it was a different, edgy atmosphere to the West Brom game. Our fans though really got behind the team, did their bit even after falling behind, all 4 sides singing at times and the celebrations at the end were brilliant. Not quite West Brom atmosphere for me, but the nerves kicked in more against Boro than West Brom, due to what was happening on the pitch.

Poll: Will you get a season ticket next season?

We were one block away from the Boro lot in the Kingsland so there was a lot of noise, but you could see it was very lively in block 20/21. We could hear a bit but we could see all the action, especially when the goals went in. Great to see.
Around us there was a mixture of very old timers who were like statues, and younger generations who were up on their feet shouting their heads off.
A very tense night but the noise and the atmosphere was brilliant.

You must have a load of old timers where you are Nick.

In The Itchen North it was very loud and the Northam were also very vocal . Only just behind West Brom game for atmosphere for me.

I don't think football chants should be taken too literally. After all, I'm not entirely sure that we are by far the greatest team the world has ever seen. And I've yet to meet a Saints fan who has got his father's gun and shot the Pompey scum. That said, the bloke my dad used to go to games with back in the day was a strawberry grower and drove a tractor, although as far as I know he could definitely read and write.

My dad never told me to be a Pompey fan, so I never called him a c**t

I may have thought he was a bit of one for making me a Saints fan at times over the years though!

We were in block 19, similar vibe to the Arsenal game from what I experienced. Was nice to catch up with a bloke I haven't seen for a few years who's moved over to block 20 from the itchen north at half time
