The Daily Mail picture is interesting. All he's got is a phone. Phones are not made to pick up distant noises. They are designed to record your voice when you are very near to it. They can just about record a conversation if you are within 3ft and in a quiet room, but highly unlikely that they could pick up anything from 50-100 yards away (the distance he was judging from Sky report), outside with a bit of wind etc.
