The somewhat obscure law is a nonsense. It is perfectly legal to 'spy' up to 3 days before a match (in fact many clubs allow the public to watch training) but it's taboo 3 days before a game. That said intuitively football fans know after the Leeds experience it's wrong. The punishment is disproportionate to the crime given the wealth of information out there on clubs and tactics (all matches are readily available to watch). Any advantage gained is miniscule and a very unpleasant media campaign by Middlesbrough and others is behind the verdict arrived at.
That said 'ignorance of the law's is no defence.
It was a stupid thing to do and I feel hurt and abused by my own club. As always it's the fans that suffer. It's the end of my love affair with Southampton. |  | | |  |

You are missing the point bud. They chose cheating as an option on numerous occasions because they felt it gave them an advantage. They have admitted spying on Oxford, if they didn't get anything from that then why did they spy on Ipswich, if that gave them nothing then why spy on Boro? How many other clubs did they do it to? How many points did they gain? Should they have even been in the play-offs? The previous 6 games with Boro we have more wins and almost double your goal tally. You are only saying it's disproportionate because of the supposed £200m but if it was some tuppney cup and a team was caught cheating you would expect them to be kicked out. Sorry for Saints fans but 'man up' and take your knocks. Good luck with the appeal which incidentally gives the new panel powers to increase the punishment. | | | |

I suspect it's questionable we admitted all our guilt.
Seems we chucked in a couple of additional throwaway games (neither of which we won) thinking that it would placate the EFL, and we would get away with a points deduction.

Other factors to take into account is the Boro CEO on the board of the EFL who should not have been in the building but was. We won't win the appeal, but we ave the right to take it to the European Court for sporting arbitration which we should do. Not going to help us get to Wembley but will shine a light on how badly the EFL have handled this and make them think twice about treating other clubs in such a arbitrary manner in the future. | |
