| If Stewart leaves, could Brereton be the answer? 09:31 - Jun 6 with 4379 views | PatfromPoole | Many would probably say no. He did OK for Derby though, and I don't think we have ever really given him a go leading the line. Martin kept playing him left-wing, which never seemed to work. And he's less injury-prone than Stewart. I think he could be useful in the Championship as a striker. As with Archer. If Stewart leaves, I think we would probably need to sign another striker, ideally with a bit of pace. But having Larin, Brereton and Archer may not be a bad place to start. [Post edited 6 Jun 9:31]

You can see the optics here. Stewart's agent has latched straight on to our failure to trigger the one-year contract extension, and is praying his client can score a couple of goals in the World Cup. Then a highly lucrative move to Saudi or similar would probably follow. Saints have cocked up / been unlucky here (delete as appropriate) depending on your viewpoint.

I’d say this isn’t the clubs fault ( other than being in a position where getting chucked out the playoffs was an option) . Quite rightly they wanted to see what division we would be playing in before offering any contract extension. If we had gone up then I doubt we’d have wanted to off an extension, stay down then obviously we did. The fact we were kicked out so missed the 5 day and Stewart is hedging his bets.

I’d give it a go - he wasn’t given a fair crack by the moron Martin sticking him out on the wing. When I saw him he seemed aggressive and determined which I liked.

Agree with this. Under Tonda, I think he would be used correctly, played in the right position and would be motivated. He was good for Derby. Tonda could get the best out of him and he is suited to Tonda's style - direct, tall, strong, aggressive. [Post edited 6 Jun 13:17]

| If Stewart leaves, could Brereton be the answer? on 13:57 - Jun 6 with 3839 views | Ifonly | Definitely not. A key reason for our success under Tonda is that we had a proper centre forward on the pitch for the entire time. I think the only 45 mins we didn't was when Archer played as central striker in the first 45 mins away at Leicester. We were 3-0 down at half time. Stewart came on at half time and we immediately looked better, going on to a famous win. If Stewart goes, we ABSOLUTELY need to replace him with a centre forward, not a utility striker like Archer, Diaz or Downs. Those 3 should have no place in the squad next year, not just on the basis of quality, but because we don't need the type of striker they are. We need a centre forward to play the way we've played this year. If we don't have at least 2 proper centre forwards next year then there will be all types of impacts, including things like having to go back to playing 3 centre backs so that we can defend set pieces. Both Larin and Stewart have done a good defensive job for us this year. If we don't have one of them on the pitch then we're back to the old problem of not being strong enough in the air. | | | |

Well said. We've got fast wingers and a lot of crosses coming in, and Stewart got his head to many of them. Also Tonda very skillfully didn't overplay Stewart and kept him fit. Activate his year extension but Spors needs to buy another big CF as cover.

I think you mean Carlton Morris. Not a bad idea, he would be the type of player we should go for, but I can't see it happening. He is only a year into his contract and their other centre forward, Agyemang, did his Achilles in April and is probably out until 2027. So I can't see them letting Morris go.

| If Stewart leaves, could Brereton be the answer? on 22:36 - Jun 7 with 2865 views | PJK1972 | Brereton-Diaz did much better at Derby, but lets face it he couldn't be any worse than he was for us. He still wasn't pulling up any trees at Derby. 7 goals in 40 games isn't great for a side pushing for the playoffs. He also has a discipline issue. He was always getting in trouble with us and that continued at Derby (8 Yellows). Yes he is a bruiser of a striker and a goal threat, but we could just do with a bit more class to be honest. | |

| If Stewart leaves, could Brereton be the answer? on 11:45 - Jun 8 with 2689 views | Ifonly | At Derby, Brereton Diaz had a bit of success because he played almost all his games in a wide role, not in the middle. He's better in those wide areas because he gets more space. Same as Arma used to be. Same as Archer who had his one good game for us this year playing wide. We don't really need that kind of utility striker because we play with genuine wingers now. When that type of utility striker tries to lead the line, it all goes to sh1t because it's a very different role. Derby played Agyemang or Morris as CF and only used Diaz in the middle when the others weren't available. If Ross goes, we need another centre forward and in my view, we should be trying to sign one anyway, even if he stays. We tried to replace Archer with a Croatian lad in January and we should be trying again. Offload Archer, Diaz and Downs and that will free up the money for a good centre forward. If Stewart goes, add another. | | | |
