This might have gone under the radar a bit as the game was a 04.00 KO UK time. In the Turkey v Paraguay game the Paraguay player Miguel Almiron was sent off for covering his mouth with his hand when making a comment to a Turkey player. New FIFA rule apparently. Worth a red card though?

I think this is if you are speaking to the opposition, to make sure that you aren't using abusive language. It's fine to cover your mouth if you arn't speaking to the opposition as far as I am aware.
Isn't it part of the players media training to do this so that their private conversations remain private It may well be abusive/racist/whatever but as said, a red card? That's a bit OTT

Racist abuse deserves a red card. That's not OTT.
This comes from the alleged racist abuse from a Benfica player to Vini Jnr where he was holding his shirt over his mouth. This rule bans that and it's a good rule.
If the conversation is friendly then there's no punishment. But if one player says it was abusive then the player hiding his words is assumed to be guilty. Good. If you're not ashamed of what you're saying then don't cover your mouth. Simples.

They can still do all of that stuff like conversations between coaching staff, or players on the same side before a free kick, or friendly chats after the game between opposition players. The rule only applies when there is a complaint.

Would that extent to, say a Scot playing against England calling one of our players an "English cvnt"? I guess on balance that would be a yes?
