As ever in International tournaments, England have players playing out of position. I’ve no idea how Djed Spence is playing left back whilst Lewis Hall hasn’t gone.

We lack a leader, Harry Kane is not natural Captain material, as a forward he cannot view the game or see where the play is going, he is a leader by example.
Jordan Pickford is the best keeper we have, he deserves his place, but he is not an organiser he is a ranter and winds himself up, as someone else said he was lucky not to get sent off.
Dare I say it perhaps last night called for Jordan Henderson, slow the game down in midfield and pull them out of their own penalty area so we could get in behind them , certainly we lacked a leader and an organiser in the midfield | |

Typical England.
Over hyped & under performed.
Offensively we ran out of ideas against a strong, well drilled defence.
On just the couple of occasions that Ghana got into our half we were all over the place & panic set in.
There's no way that any team can win a World Cup with a poor defence.
Our defence is just so bad, last night we had a back four that had never played together before & it showed big time.
That was the case against Croatia, we defended badly & got away with it but we won't get away with it against the better teams. | | | |

I don't think the game could have got any slower, even with Henderson.
JoPreston is right, we will struggle against the top teams.
It was all so predictable and easy to defend against, with little threat up front.
I agree with comment about Pickford, he just rants, often for no reason and was lucky (again) last night.

The very last thing we needed was to slow the game down even more. We moved the ball too slowly and so their defence was always able to adjust. If you're going to pass your way through a low block, you need to move the ball quickly, pass and move, one-two.
But there are other ways to do it. We should have crossed the ball more. Never once was there a first time cross. We either passed the ball back inside after a few touches, or occasionally tried to take on the full back. Our best chances came from crosses and we should have done more of it.

Cool being the operative word. Conditions have an enormous influence on how the England team performs. They always struggle and have to slow down to a walking pace in hot conditions. They were lucky that the Croatia game was played in an airconditioned stadium. If they have to play Mexico at the Azteca Stadium, they will struggle even more because the high altitude will leave them gasping for breath.
Being accustomed to the local conditions gives host nations a big advantage in world cups, which usually results in them reaching the final stages, although with 3 hosts this time, none of them being particularly good at football, they're not all going to make it. But, you'd expect Mexico to beat England 9 times out of 10 in Mexico City, simply because of the conditions. [Post edited 24 Jun 15:17]

Yes, you could see they were just trying to cope with the heat and nowhere near capable of peak performances. Even when we get a hot May or August day in England the players slow right down. Imagine going out and playing football here now. You wouldn't be running fast for long. But, the players from sub-tropical countries are used to the heat. [Post edited 24 Jun 15:34]

I respectfully disagree with that. Mostly we moved the ball too slowly. Only rarely did we up the tempo. If you compared last night to a PL game, there's no comparison. It was so slow and there were enough backwards passes to give Russel Martin an orgasm.
If you watch a quality passing team (like a Barcelona or Spain of old) pass their way through a low block, their success comes from moving the ball quickly, often with one touch. England took too many touches and were quickly surrounded. That's not surprising, England hardly ever pass their way through a packed defence. We're just not very good at it. Crosses are a better option for us.
It's not true that "they won literally every cross we put in". If you watched the game back, you'd see our best chances all came from getting the ball into the box from wide areas, not passing it about in front of their defence. Rice, Anderson, Saka and O'Reilly all had good headed chances from crosses, while passing it around gave us virtually nothing. We should have been more aggressive throughout, got more players in the box and more crosses in, like we did at the end. | | | |
