Nick seeing as we have a decent amount of time now, and given your position, perhaps we could try and organise something against the bubble?

There's enough evidence to show that it makes no difference to safety and is a significant cost on normal fans, both from a time and money perspective.

Also we are one of less than a handful of clubs that has it, which surely proves that it's outdated and unnecessary

I've just booked (cancellable) digs for the Saturday night of that weekend in Southampton.

And they weren't particularly cheap, which makes me think that a lot of non-Sotonian residents have already done likewise.

Poll: If we were today re-instated to the play-off final, would you go on Saturday?

I did think that the number of police just stood around doing nothing a few miles from Fratton as our coaches came in was a bit bonkers.

Surely if it's a bubble, you don't need so many dibble (?).

I'm a bit on the fence re the bubble.

Every time they haven't had a bubble at Fratton, I have missed a large part of the first-half due to their inbreds waiting outside the train station for us.

Unfortunately they just can't be trusted not to behave like idiots. I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I am pretty sure that the only full bubble matches now remaining in the EPL and EFL are Saints v Skates and Cardiff v Swansea, full bubble meaning that away fans are prohibited from making their own way to the match by train or cars and instead are transported on official coaches. What a way to ruin a local derby! This has to come to an end soon.

it'll only come to an end if the fans do something about it. I actually spoke to the FSA last season - too late to do anything about it sadly - and they said they'd had success in getting them removed elsewhere by working with club's fans groups.

Sadly our FAB are the biggest f*cking melts around who care more about women's football than dealing with tough problems like this.

My personal opinion is if we want it changed we'll have to put external fan pressure on the club, because our FAB aren't going to do it.

That needs organisation and Nick is one of the few fans in our fanbase who can do that sort of thing

Pat hits the nail on the head about the issues that happen in getting Saints supporters to the ground from Fratton Station and back again.

There havent been many issues in recent years due to going by train effectively being a bubble in itself.

You dont need to many Poloice for a bubble game, for the last games when we could go by train, hundreds of TRansit police have had to be bought in from afar to escort the fans from the stations well as police from other forces

the police presence for the bubble games last season was easily as big as the ones by train, and there were actually more arrests at Fratton last season than there was at the league cup game.

Also if Pat is worried about missing part of the game then he could get the early train into Fratton.

There is no reason for a bubble where we are forced to get to the ground hours before kick off to get buses that then make us wait hours more before the game.

It's draconian, over the top and criminalises fans.

Re your last paragraph alluding to their fans acting like idiots at their place, I actually think the game at St Mary's is a bigger issue now we've moved the away end, no quick and easy route to escort them.

And let's not forget it was the cup game here in 2010 which proved the final straw and got it implemented.

I suppose they could give it a go and see what happens. There should be escorted coaches provided for those who want protection all the way there and back. But those who choose not to go by coach, take their own risk perhaps.

The trouble is, from the police point of view, yes they had far too many officers for a bubble game, but they would need them everywhere for a non bubble game - at all.the train stations between the cities, all the service stations and both cities.

I understand the bubble. But it was way over the top, getting on a coach at 6:30am, no food and drink for the journey. If there is a bubble, have the game kick off at 3, no getting on the coach at stupid o clock and allow fans to eat and drink. No need either to get to the ground so early.

Even if the bubble stays, some.changes need to be made definitely.

I think your last sentence hits the nail on the head in the fact that it wasn't the bubble that was the problem, but the draconian way it was implemented last time.

You say that if you wanted to avoid missing the start then you could get an earlier train.

That wasn't so easy in 2005 when all the trains were mysteryally cancelled forcing everyone to get on a train that arrived at Fratton station about 25 minutes before kick off and meant that everyone was kettled to the ground at a slow pace with Pompey fans slowing it up even more meaning it was 20 minutes into the game before the first of those on the train got in.

Likewise the cup game in 2019, some did get an earlier train and were immediately met at Fratton and escorted into the ground, those who got a train after saw it held up be so called signal problems to arrive at Fratton Station at kick off time and walk unopposed down Goldsmith Avenue to get in 20 minutes into the game.

The sad fact is that getting the train to Fratton is not that simple, they are looking for stragglers to pick off, you can't just get of the train and go into a nearby pub, you wouldnt last 10 minutes.

Likewise when they come to Southampton

But as you point out yourself Nick the trains are effectively their own kind of bubble so the likelihood of stragglers being picked off is close to zero anyway.

Plus of course the fact that many people drove to Fratton and walked to the ground and there was zero reported or recorded incidents of these people being attacked, and zero arrests made as a result.

We are in 2026, the days of raging street battles at games are long gone, and the fact that fans shouldn't be allowed to make their own way to the game by their own choice of transport is absolutely ridiculous.

All any bubble does is incur more cost and disturbance to everyone, both sets of fans should be pushing back against it as strongly as possible

You are right our FAB are utterly useless and most are in it for themselves thinking they are special.

When was the last time any FAB member ask us what we thought about something, there’s loads of channels that could use. The 3 main forums, Facebook, X etc yet none of them do.

I thought I read something that the club are looking for new FAB , I’m not sure if this will totally new or just an excuse to appoint their mates or vet those who apply.

As for the bubble I’d like to know how many coppers were in attendance for the bubbles in 2012 to the bubbles last season. It looked to me there were way more last season. The how bubble was way over the top getting to st Mary’s at 7 to get to Fratton at 9 ish.

I think Saints fans could be trusted both home and away for it not to be a bubble , unfortunately I can’t say the same about Pompey fans. It’s drummed into them from birth they must hate the scummers even those that don’t even like football say “ we are going over to scum to do some shopping” .

Their local rag cannot go a week without reporting on something about Southampton losing out to Portsmouth.

One of our group is applying for the FAB as they're taking new members, but given he's a normal bloke who doesn't give a sh*t about the women's team, doesn't travel by bingo bus, doesn't wear colours and just goes to the games with his mates I assume there's no way he'll be selected for it

Your last paragraph reminded me of the game in 2012, driving along the M27 from Portsmouth into Southampton there was a riot van on every bridge

I was working at the old Hightown secondary school at the time converting it into a training centre, according to the blokes I was working with a load of geezers from the estate turned up and raided the skips for weapons to throw at the coaches. The OB turned up and chased them off

The fact is that although it is 2026 in most places in England when it comes to portsmouth a fixture with Saints is very much still rooted in 1976 & 1984, the sad fact is that when i have gone by train, you can't just pop down there, get off the train and go in the pub, have a few drinks and then stroll to Fratton safely.

You go and it is a bubble, one that means that once you arrive at the train station 3 hours before the game then you arent going to see a pint in a pub again till 3 hours after it.

The bubble game was not run well, but truth was you got into the ground and had 2-3 hours of having a pint before the game and after the game were back in the pub in Southampton after.

It was a lot simpler than going by train and in truth I dont really buy into the human rights side of things, lets also be blunt in todays policing and the courts sentencing of late, you get caught up in a pushing match with a few Pompey fans and you arent getting out that weekend and your up in court on Monday with a draconian sentence.

That is what happened in 1984, anyone arrested at that cup game was detained until Monday and 99% got custodial sentences ranging between 1-6 months.

Who wants to risk that

It was over the top last time. I do understand the bubble, but there was no need to get there so early. Get on the coach at 9, get to Fratton by 10, less waiting around, a few hours more sleep, and let people eat and drink sandwiches, coffee on the coach like any away game. It was over the top having to be on a coach by 6:30 am, no food and drink. The fact that it was so overkill, is why so many are saying they didn't like the bubble. It was far too restrictive.

Yeah exactly. Getting to St Mary's by 6:30 am for a 20 mile journey was crazy. And no food or drink, just in case a few fans sneak in one beer on the journey. For me, this has to change.

Force us all on to busses "to keep us safe", but we arn't cattle. You can eat and drink, but only if you pay at the grounds. That is like some kind of authoritarian control. Sneaking in a sandwich because you don't want to a buy a £12 burger.

The thing is Nick you make out like there will be wide spread disorder and people nicked all over the place, but that just doesn’t match up to the reality.

It’s actually been a while since there’s been any real serious problems at the games and the night game in the league cup without the bubble saw less arrests than our game last season with the bubble.

The bubble isn’t needed to the degree some people make out to be, and if people are worried about missing kick off or want the safety of the buses then they can still choose to use them.

If it can be the case that virtually every other derby in the country doesn’t need one then surely the same is true of ours?

I got the train down in 2004 and 2005, never saw kick off either time, trains always mysteriously delayed.

In 2005 missed first 25mins

Pompey never seem these issues coming to St Mary’s

I’d love to do it by train, but with Noon kick off on a Sunday, be amazed if we get in by kick off, so unfortunately think bubble will need to continue

Was it 2004 we had old 'slam door' train carriages which kept stopping at various stations on the way? Many stations had a greeting party and loads kept jumping off to slap them then jump back on.

When it then hailed heavily and the dickheads smashed up their own town afterwards.

Not sure that the night game in 2019 saw less trouble, there was major disorder which saw 7 men jailed as in this link

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-

Most of the issues with the bubble game at Fratton related to the throwing of missiles between the two sets of fans after the final whistle.

I have been attending Saints Pompey games since 1974, there has always been trouble,, there hasnt been one trip to Fratton in that time, when you could go down by train to Fratton or Portsmouth, walk out the station and go to a local pub.

Pretty similar at our place as well.

Since 1987 I have been down to Pompey by train on every occasion that I have been able to , in 87 we went and had a few drinks in Portsmouth, but there wasn't many Pompey fans around the crowd was only 17,000, since then no chance.

Most of the other derby's are either in the same city ie Liverpool/Everton or between places that are too far away to have a real inter city hatred ie Brighton & Palace.

Sunderland V Newcastle have tried it without bubbles, but there transport infastructure makes that viable, both grounds here dont allow you to do that, ie Pompey is just one straight road from Fratton Station and past the home end to the away end and St Mary's is again a straight road just much longer and through the city centre.
