Talking of success, our captain in the 1983-84 season hasn't been mentioned: Mick Mills. He was also captain of England in the 1982 World Cup Finals, where we were undefeated in all 5 games. | |

Im not sure how long Fonte was actually Captain, Kelvin Davis was captain up to getting dropped early in our first season back in the Premier League and then Adam Lallana took over till he left in 2014.
So he was definitely Captain in 14/15 & 15/16, he started the season as Captain in 16/17, but was replaced i think in the december as it became clear he wanted to leave for the money and then I think Van Djke was given the job, albeit briefly before his injury.
So as good as Fonte was as a player, his time as Captain was only really two seasons, so could he be considered to be greater than Terry Paine ? I would say not.
Jimmy Case was a great captain for us for a number of years, so I would have him above Fonte.
So then it comes down to whether he could fit in to the top 3, I would have Claus ahead of Fonte and then there is Alan Ball Chris Nicholl and Glenn Cockerill.
Ball would certainly have been our best captain in terms of ability and leadership, but Nicholl would have led him a close second.
Glenn Cockerill from memory was only Captain for a short while after Case left in 1991, so would fall into the same bracket as Steve Davis & Fonte, great long term players, but only Captain for a short period. | |

Not sure Chris Nichol was ever Captain.
Yes, he was a great leader & I'm sure would have made a good Captain for us but he never was.

Huxford was a fan favourite back then. Old style no bullshit hard nut. I don' recall him being captain for that long because Paine was relentlessly chirping in Bates' ear and was handed the job.
My vote for best captain is Tony Knapp. Bates paid a club record for him from Leicester and the following year made him skipper...The changing room was littered with Paine's toys flying out of the pram. Proved to be another astute move by Ted though, as Knapp was key to a good period for the club through the mid 60's . | | | |

Jimmy Gabriel and Nick Holmes must have been captains at some point, surely. For me the top three are Rodrigues, Case and Stephens. Controvertially, and to the dislike of some, I'd say Jack Stephens has been the best - taking everything into consideration.: surely the longest serving as captain, a strong character among some poor sides and a great clubman. Whenever Tony Knapp is mentioned to my old man he still remembers the time when he politely asked for his autograph on the train station and got a stern no as a reply. Don't think my old man has ever forgiven him for that!
Dean Hammond captained us to a Wembley cup win, admittedly the JPT but still a Wembley win, and two promotions, don't think anyone else has done that. He also joined a side that had been through administration and was a right mess. For me he is probably the best due to the achievements during his time with us
