I said on here at the start of the tournament that the downfall for England would be the lack of an experienced leader and organiser in the defence and that came home to roost last night.
Just as we were heading into the final part of the game, we were all over the place.
On the first goal we had 6 players stood on our 6 yard line with 4 of them marking no one and their man had plenty of time and space to pick his spot as we were so deep.
Likewise the second, plenty of defenders in and around the 6 yard box but 4 of not sure where they should be |  |

Tuchel lost us that game with his negative substitutions we should have gone for the 2 nd goal bought Saka or Rashford on . When we played quickly we caused them problems. I dont think it had anything to do with a lack of leadership on the pitch just lack of leadership from the sidelines. How would the referee have reacted if England had been as physical, if not more so, than Argentina? Eliot Anderson was as physical as he was allowed to be with Messi, but he knew he was walking a tight rope after he got that yellow card. Declan Rice not being 100% fit was an issue too.
I agree with Toffee that what we really needed was fresh players up front to reinforce our dominance after we scored. I've always thought that when Saka, Eze and Gordon are on the pitch, supporting Kane and Bellingham, we're pretty much unbeatable.
Tuchel went far too defensive too soon, because similar tactics had worked for him when we were down to 10 men against Mexico, but they didn't have attacking players anywhere near as good as Fernandez or Lautaro Martinez, let alone Messi, and with 11 men, it wasn't necessary anyway.
I think we all agree that if England had gone in search of a 2nd goal, rather than retreating into our own penalty area after scoring the first, we'd have won.

Last night was all on Tuchel and his subs, bringing on defenders instead of fresh attackers was ridiculous. Up until that point the defence were doing okay and Argentina didn’t pose much of a threat, they sat back, showed them far too much respect and got done.
Playing an unfit Reece James at right midfield/wing back was naive too. As was taking him in the first place given his injury record in recent years. Not taking an out an out left back i.e. Lewis Hall was careless too.
Declan Rice looked goosed and yet he gave Mainoo zero minutes. Rodri would have had a field day on Sunday if England had won last night. |  | | |

As soon as we scored we should have met fire with fire and fought it out. 4-6-0, man for man marking and taking our chances with breaks. Take the fight to them. Everyone should know by now that if you hold back you're inviting the other team to score and a team as good as Argentina will sooner rather than later. We handed the game to them on a plate. We had no outlet after the substitutions . Tuchel was brought in to change our style and be more positive and it worked for many games prior to this tournament. He gets to the World Cup and we do well with quick attacking play and then defensive later in some of the games because he has to ie when we went down to 10 men against Mexico. last night was not the game to defend and try and hang on for dear life not when you have a genius on the other side. Tuchel made a mistake, it happens but what a game to choose to do it. 🤦♂️ | |

Have they improved since Southgate? It’s clear that there has been improvement over the last 20 years and you look at the progress since they got St George’s Park, they’ve now been in 4 semi finals in their last five tournaments. But for this tournament the semi’s were to be expected as a minimum. I’ve never known so many England fans to be in unison about the phuck ups with the subs.

You're right.
It was the Russball Martin tactics in the second half that lost the game. You score one, (especially against Argentina) you have to go for at least one more goal, not sit back, invite pressure and concede the inevitable goal. And they had another goal in them against those toxic midgets.
