Andy O'Brien has followed in the footsteps of many Leeds legends by signing for Vancouver Whitecaps.

Although the official Leeds website report that O'Brien has been released to concentrate on "overseas opportunities", reports in Canada suggest he is heading for the Whitecaps.

The present Vancouver outfit are a reincarnation of the NASL outfit which saw an exodus of Leeds old boys arrive in the late 70's/early 80's, most notably Peter Lorimer, Ray Hankins, Terry Yorath and David Harvey, as well as a certain coach called Johnny Giles. The Whitecaps those of us old enough to remember and love folded in 1984.

O'Brien, 33, leaves after 38 appearances and two goals for Leeds. He was initially signed on-loan by Simon Grayson in October 2010 but Leeds fended off stiff competition from Cardiff City in the January 2011 transfer window.

O'Brien hit the headlines in November 2011 when he apparently refused to play at Burnley, drawing criticism from Grayson and Chairman Ken Bates, however this was a massive own goal and PR disaster when it emerged O'Brien had depression. Particularly in light of what happened to Gary Speed.

Hopefully Andy is over this now and can look forward to a fresh start in Vancouver. Although he was clearly past his best when he arrived at Elland Road to play for the club he supported as a boy, we wish him well!
